How many quarts of transmission fluid do i need

the transmission pan typically holds 4-6 quarts depending on the transmission. the fluid capacity of the transmission is 8-12 quarts roughly.

A typical flush will consist of 12-14 quarts of fluid.

When the pan is dropped and fluid is drained, to refill, it usually needs 5 - 6 quarts. When refilling, check the transmission fluid dipstick as you are adding the last two quarts. And also run the transmission thru the gears.

If you have your owners manual, there is a section containing the capacities for all fluids. You may also simply check your fluid level, with a running motor and warm transmission. If the stick indicates add, start with a 1/4 quart and work your way up. Unless there is a problem with the trans, there is no real reason to ever add fluid unless your are flushing the transmission.

Hello paige farrar: Depending on the transmission the fluid and capacity is as follows. Automatic to drain and refill using Dexron type 3 fluid. Is 2.46 us quarts of oil. On a overhaul the amount is 7.3 us quarts. If you have a standard transmission the fluid to use is GL 4 gear oil. Should hold 2.64 us quarts of oil. Thank You for using FixYa.
