Question about 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX

1 Answer

The green overdrive light on the dash keeps flashing and the transmission jerks into gear. Any suggestions on how to solve this. The test codes that come are P1747, PO156, and PO161. I have already replaced the EPC. Could it really be an oxygen sensor or is there a fuse for the EPC. Is there a transmission module anywhere?

Not an oxygen sensor

vehicle speed sensor or oss is most likely cause.

Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS) 7H103: The output shaft speed (OSS) sensor is a magnetic pickup, located at the output shaft ring gear that sends a signal to the powertrain control module to indicate transmission output shaft speed. The powertrain control module uses this signal for torque converter clutch control, shift scheduling, used in determining EPC pressure. Symptoms: No converter engagements, harsh shifts, abnormal shift schedules. DTC: P0720, P0721 The green overdrive light on the dash keeps - std~us~en~file=d14110a.gif~gen~ref.gif

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) 9E731: The vehicle speed sensor is a magnetic pickup that sends a signal to the powertrain control module. This VSS signal tells the PCM vehicle speed. The PCM uses this signal to modify upshift schedules. Symptoms: Shift engagement/disengagement (hunting) on grades. DTC: P0500, P0503, P1500, P1501, P1503

Is overdrive activated when the light at the end of the gear shift is on or off on a Lincoln navigator 2001

If the "Overdrive Off" indicator is illuminated, this will prevent the torque converter from locking and engaging overdrive. This can be useful when traveling through hilly regions or when heavily loaded to keep the transmission from continuously hunting for the correct gear. When the light is off, the transmission will operate normally, including locking the torque converter and engaging OD. You should normally drive with the light off. If the light is flashing, that's an indication of a transmission diagnostic trouble code being present.

The Transmission shifts very hard after the first shift. Check engine light is on as well as the Green overdrive light blinks off and on. Speed sensor was cleaned and even replaced.

Your on the right track. Have you scanned the PCM, what codes did you get? If not and you changed the vehicle speed sensor,(VSS) did you check the (OSS) output shaft speed sensor, it will cause torque converter lock up and hard shifting and that pesky OD light flashing. I have also found that clutch packs inside auto tranny's dry out. Ford and some aftermarket companies sell a fluid that will recondition the clutch packs.

1999 silverado transmission

Since the transmission shifting and torque converter lock (cruise speeds) up are computer controlled you need to have a scanner hooked up that can read Transmission control module (TCM) fault codes. Also check for engine codes as this could be a misfire, but in that case the check engine light should be flashing while the engine is misfiring and set a fault code. If no codes of any kind are present in memory when the testing is done you almost certainly have a mechanical fault in the transmission like a malfunctioning torque converter clutch, but even that should set a fault code, so have the testing done.

The "off" light for the overdrive shut off flashes.

the light is flashing to alert you to the fact that a fault has been detected in the transmission, the most common is excessive slippage detected by the torque speed sensor as compared to the outshaft shaft speed sensor, U will need to have the system tested for the stored trouble code that is set when this OD light blinks.

Push button overdrive column light flashes, which fuse controls it? transmission still shifts through all the gears, including reverse, overdrive is the only problem

the flashing overdrive light indicates a code for the transmission you need to have your codes read to see what is causing the problem

Overdrive light started flashing

the OD light is flashing to let u know a fault has occurred in the transmission electronic controls or that it is slipping plus other issues, go to Kragen or Autozone and ask them to run a trouble code test, it is free, post the code back here for me to look at.
