The VIN Numbers are where you said. The engine has a casting number and a serial number that is not the VIN number, but is linked to the vehicle. Image a production line with 200 engines on pallets all numbered and waiting to go in a vehicle. The vehicle has a VIN number on it and they just pick the nearest engine and mount it, registering that number engine to the vehicle it went into.
Chassis number? Do you mean VIN? The most common place to find your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is on a small metal plate attached to the driver side top of the dashboard close to the windshield. In fact, it should be visible through the windshield.
Other places you look:
Vehicle Identification Label in your Owner's Manual
Stamped on the frame under the front hood
On a sticker on the driver's side door pillar
On state vehicle registration certificate
On the vehicle title of ownership
If you'd like to know the original paint color of a vehicle to repaint or touch up scrapes, one of the ways to find out is by looking up the Vehicle Identification Number, more commonly referred to as a VIN. The VIN is a 17-digit number that can tell you practically all of the information about a car, such as make, prior reported accidents and color code. The dealership will be able to determine the paint code based on the VIN.

For2001 Ford Mustang 3.8L SFI 6cyl engine, with which your specific vehicle is equipped, can be most
easily identified by the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), located on
either the VIN tag, mounted in the upper left-hand corner of the
instrument panel, or on the vehicle certification label, located on the
driver-s side door pillar. The engine identifying code is the 8th digit
of the VIN. The engine VIN codes are as follows:

First, either find your VIN number on your vehicle registration or car title or in vehicle maintenance records from your dealer. Additionally, you can find the VIN at various locations on your car. Frequently you can find your VIN number in one of the following locations: on the driver's side door jam (sometimes on the passenger's side), under the windshield on the driver's side, near the firewall of the vehicle or on the steering column. Other places to search for a vehicle identification number include various locations under the hood of your car.
Also engine identification can take place using various methods. The VIN,
described earlier in this section, contains a code identifying the
engine which was originally installed in the vehicle. In most cases,
this should be sufficient for determining the engine with which your
car is currently equipped. But, some older vehicles may have had the
engine replaced or changed by a previous owner. If this is the case,
the first step in identification is to locate an engine serial number
and code which is stamped on the block or located on adhesive labels
that may be present on valve covers or other engine components.
