Key won't go into the ignition

I own a 2006 Chevy Impala. Last night, I drove to the store and when I returned, my key wouldn't go all the way into my ignition. The key would only go in around 3/4 of the way. Additionally, the steering wheel didn't lock. The key won't go in and the wheel is able to turn freely. Help!

you know, I'm not certain its in the right position but, the key came out freely when i put it in park. i've tried moving the steering wheel side to side and jiggled the key repeatedly. the sterring wheel itself (and the wheels) turn freely as though the steering column never locked. the key feels like something is blocking it from going all the way in.

This is exactly what happened to my truck last night. The steering wheel moves freely. I had a hard time putting the key in the ignitition. The ignition will not turn. Neither will the shifter. It seems like it is not in park but then how did the key come out? My car is a 2004 Chevy 2500HD. Did you even get a solution to your issue?

Check to make sure the lock cyclinder was turned all the way to the correct position to remove the key.... and make sure it is still in that position. next jiggle the steering wheel slightly (left and right) while attempting to insert the key

just realized something... when you say the wheel turns freely... do you mean the lock cylinder ? if so the small arm that actuates the ignition switch may have broken... or the ignition switch itself

Might flash computer. Sounds like security is locking ignition out thinking something was stolen. This happens when car parts are changed sometimes.

How do I program my key for my 2006 Chevy Impala?

Add Duplicate Key (PK3 or PK3+ key)
1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.
3. Remove the existing key and, within fifteen seconds, insert the new key
and turn it to ON (RUN).
4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming
the key into the vehicle.
Originate New Master Key (PK3 or PK3+ key)

1. Insert new key into ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (RUN) position.
The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten minutes.
2. When the security light goes out, you have one minute to start the next
step. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back to the ON (RUN)
position. The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten
more minutes.
3. When the security light goes out, you have one minute to start the next
step. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back on the ON (RUN)
position. The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten
more minutes.
4. After the security light has gone off the third time, the key has been programmed
into the vehicle’s computer and will operate the car. It has replaced ALL the
previous electronic key codes and is the ONLY key programmed into the
vehicle’s computer.
