1998 Buick Century losses significant power at lower speeds

’98 Buick Century with 91k miles. It starts and idles normal. A significant power loss issue has developed, usually between 0 to 45 mph. The car hesitates and is very slow to react to gas pedal input (bogs down). Then it’ll kick in and overreact to the gas pedal being pushed down, and then it'll drive fairly normal at highway cruising speeds. Problem tends to occur more once the vehicle is warmed up (e.g., taking off from stop light). The hesitation doesn’t occur if I rev the engine while in parked and in neutral. Tried a couple tanks with fuel injector cleaner with no improvement. Services performed in the last 6 months by a qualified mechanic include repair of leaking head gasket, new plugs/wires, tranny fluid, and coolant.

Possibly the EGR valve or TPS sensor if you have CEL codes. Check fuel pressure and if low change fuel filter if it is still low replace the fuel pump I beleive it is suppossed to be 41 to 47 psi. Pretty easy to replace fuel filter the Buick Century has a cover you remove in the trunk to access the fuel pump making the change very easy, if you can fit in the cramped space of the trunk.

Has your qualified mechanic checked or replaced the plenum/upper intake wich on some engines had a tendancy to crack in the throat by the throttle body allowing antifreeze to enter the intake manifold

sounds to me like a plugged catilytic converter do a vacuum test or a back pressure check

Sounds like it might need to be retimed or change the fuel filter.

I have a 1997 buick century with only 45,000 miles on it. Yesterday while going highway speed, the antilock brake light came on, followed by no brakes, gas gauge fell to 0 (has a full tank), no steering,...

If the engine died you would loose power assist steering and power assist brakes. I have to think it was an electrical power failure somewhere.
Will it start up and idle now ?

I have a 1998 Buick Century. Yesterday while driving the car's oil light would turn-on when I stopped at a stop sign and when I accelerated the oil light turned-off. I pulled into a gas station and...

The oil light coming on when stopped at a stop sign tells me your engine was already damaged before you had the power loss problem. I would not waste the 650 to put in an oil pump. You would be further ahead to just replace the engine.

The steering in my 98 Buick Century is hard to turn at low speeds. Is this a steering pump issue or the rack and pinion?

Your PS pump is fine.

This vehicle has:

Variable-assist power steering: A power steering system that uses valves and speed sensors to vary the amount of steering assist according to engine or road speed. At slow speeds more steering assist is delivered and steering the wheels is easier; necessary for parking, etc.. At higher speeds, steering assist is reduced and more steering effort is required to steer the car, giving the driver greater feel of the road. Also known as Speed-sensitive power steering.

Loss of current to the magnetic coils would cause a loss of power assist at low speed. Coil resistance can be checked with an ohmmeter, and should read about two ohms. An infinite (open) reading indicates a bad coil (requires replacing the rack since the coils are not serviceable). Checking for shorts between both sides of the coil assembly and rack housing is also recommended.

Best wishes

Speedometer wont move and the miles on the car wont show i changed the fuse still same problem (1998 Buick Century)

This could be the speed sensor in the transmission. I believe it is electric on the 98 takes about 15min to change and is located on the long end of the trans.

Low coolant light, temp normal

try adding it via the reservoir. make sure you have a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. If you want to cheat, cheat on the side of more antifreeze than water. Look for a leak in the hoses and water pump to find out if she has a larger problem that is causing the loss of coolant. look for drips under the car.
