I bought my doughter a 1999 VW beetle today and when I bought the car it ran great almost as good as new.I drove it home, then she drove it to town 2 times and it ran great with no problems. Then she tryed to start it to move it in the yard and it would only start and then die.I tryed to pat the gas and it would keep running but as soon as I let offthe gas or tryed to hold the gas stedy it would die.then it will start right back up and die again.any help would be great thanks in advance
The idler is blocked in the intake, or the idle controller has failed, if you take the air pipe off the intake there is a butterfly and on the side you will see a hole, on the side you will see a device, now some time you can just spray some carb cleaner in there and give it a good flush out. also spray the butterfly and clean this up. open with the cable and do the same. you may fined that the air filter needs replacing so would do this at the same time. leave for 10 min and then start engine don't worry about it coffing etc its just the cleaner being burnt off in the engine give it a few good revs. then let it idle for 5 min, when you have done that then fit the pipes back on. run engine it should be fine now, if not repeat.

Hi There,
Try this: You will need 2 people - Have someone Spray Starting Fluid in the throttle then start the car and have someone spray the fluid continuously into the throttle. If the car continues to run you have a fuel problem, but if it stalls out, replace the coil pak. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

It sounds like your alternator is not charging. You may want to have it tested and replace/rebuild it if necessary. Many times the problem is that the brushes are worn in the alternator and it stops charging correctly. The brushes are usually attached to the voltage regulator and are replaceable if you have the parts and skill. You can also replace the voltage regulator/brush assembly as a unit.
Many parts stores will test your alternator for free.
If you need more help, post a comment.
Thanks,
Tim

Sorry to say but you and I are in the same boat. The 2004 Beetle Convertible is the biggest piece of **** on the road! My wife and I have had one, pre-certified mind you, since 2005. We have had THOUSANDS of dollars of work done to this car, mainly covered by warranty. We attempted to have this problem fixed by out local VW Dealer. It is one of three things... 1) It's a vacuum problem. All of the vacuum hoses need to be replaced. I wouldn't do this since our dealer did this for us (400 bucks) and nothing changed, same problem occurred after we had all the work done. 2) It is the ignition coil (800 price installed with new wires and plugs from the dealer) 3) It's the fuel pump... This came from the service advisor at the dealership. I sincerely hope you got the extended warranty!!! Good luck...
