Hi Kristi You need a mechanic to look at this for you.
What you are describing is a possible Head gasket fault, if the engine is running erratic and now will not start the spark plugs could be wet.
If this is the case if you try to start it or run the engine it could cause a lot more damage.
Signs for head gasket :- rapid engine temperature rise, boiling of coolant, erratic idle to the point of no start, coolant loss excess water from exhaust probable white smoke from exhaust when engine is running. Water leaking either external to head gasket, water leaking internal of engine i.e. into bores. Water leaking into engine oil.
This can be seen via dipstick will show raised oil level and possibly a creamy texture. can be confirmed by excessive creamy substance in oil filler cap and rocker cover. Now on saying this it could be something more simple like an under active cooling fan. This is why I advise someone to look at it before you start spending money on things it might not be. Good luck

SOURCE: 1994 Honda Civic LX\overheating within 2 mile drive

Remove and raise upper hose at thermostat end and remove lower rad hose.
Fill rad with a hose and watch for flow from bottom rad hose and/ or bottom rad hose connecton.......water should fall though rad easily.
Honda rads are cheap.....any restriction....replace rad.

Remove thermostat....fill thermostat housing with hose and watch for water flow at bottom rad hose.
Flush good.

Remove heater hoses.......flush back and forth until a good flow is present "With heater control set to hot" if no or poor flow....replace heater core.

Stop leak can plug everything.

Also.......not likely causing over heating....but ....at your mileage,if you do not know if the timing belt has been changed.....CHANGE IT NOW!
Water pump is optional at this mileage.

SOURCE: 1991 honda accord is overheating. Installed new

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

===

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

===

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

===

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

===

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

SOURCE: honda accord ex 2001 check engine light suddenly came on, car started to idle roughly

If it's running rough, chances are that it's misfiring. If the Check Engine light is flashing/blinking, it is definitely misfiring.
If that's the case, drive it as little as possible... Or straight to the mechanic because the more you drive it while it's misfiring, the higher the chance is of you ruining your catalytic converter.

2001 Chrysler Town & Country getting 9.6 mpg

yes you need a new thermostat or there is low coolant. this will affect the mpg because your overheating and thats why its stalling. dont drive until you fix or you will blow your head gasket if it isnt blown already. change thermostate and check coolant.

Interesting.
When it stalls and won't start, are you missing spark to the plugs or fuel to the injectors ?

Car was overheating replaced the thermostat now the heat isnt blowing hot and the car is over heating worse it's a mitsubishi galante

Could be that fan is not kicking on. check and make sure it is connected. could also be a vapor lock. some cars require bleeding water system and if so most bleeding screws are located around thermostat housing. Call local autozone and ask if your car requires bleeding water system....NOW the overheating could be from fan not kicking on and the best way to find out is to turn on defrost and if fan is working it will kick on automaticaly. If it does kick on then this shows that fan is working fine but this does not mean that fan is running properly.The fan is controlled by a heat sensor which kicks the fan on when motor reaches a curtain heat range. If this sensor is not working it will cause car to overheat.... Could be also that waterpump is bad.Not all waterpumps leak when they go bad.Sometimes the impeler on the waterpump which is what moves water through the system simply stops working and this would cuase it to overheat.......hope this info helps and good luck...Please rate my post and if you need more info fill free to contact me...Need to find where leak is coming from also for this is more than likely the problem........

I put a new thermostat in my 1994 ford escort,and still dont have warm heat while my heater is on. How do I test to see if I have a bad waterpump?

If it where your water pump isthe vehicle would overheat. After you replaced the thermostat do you run the engine at idle with the radiator cap removed until the radiator fan came one? This will help push the air out of the system. There are two other possibilities. 1. The heater core is plugged. Back flushing the heater core may help remove the built up debris and get you heat again. 2. The blend door may not be fully transitioning from cold to hot. You should be ale to hear a district change in how the air sounds when switching from full hot to full cold. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Antifreeze leaks from somewhere around waterpump, but only when hot. plus it does not overheat. only have 60,000 miles on this 2007 EXcivic

Your vehicle leaks when hot because that is when the cooling system is under pressure. It is not overheating because you haven't leaked enough coolant yet. It will. Replace your water pump before it overheats and you have head gasket problems.

My jaguar 4.2 2003 s type car will not start when hot but if you wait 20 mins it will start. stat & waterpump replaced.there is no coolant loss or signs of overheating , car drives fine apart from this...

sounds like the temp sencer switch is bad the fan isn't comming on when you turn the car off
when you turn your motor off the temp in the motor rises and the fan shood come on thats why you need to wait 20min to restart the temp has gone down and it isnt vapor locked
