How can I set the timing on a 1996 dodge stratus 2.4l engine

  • mechanic144 Apr 16, 2017

theoretically, you cannot set timing. its a factory set and no adjustment is required. however, due to being timing belt driven, upon replacement of the timing belt, you can only then set the timing by lining up divots in each timing gear then installing belt. but otherwise, there is no way to manually set the timing like on older cars....sorry

I had exactly the same car it ran really rough! as soon as you would stop at a stoplight it would die. Start it back up and your down the road. I found out there is a wiring issue. Part of the main crank, cam oil coil wires run along the egr pipe/hose the wires overheat and melt shorting out a variety of systems. I ended up rewiring the branch in a wide loop around the master cylinder. I even taped the wires like factory and replaced the plastic insulation. The short(s) had fried the fuel pump, so I replaced it with one from the pool yard and viola ran a lot better did a complete rock auto tune up and the car ran great for how old it was. Also the instrument cluster eventually will be affected (no Tach or intermittent tach) so try looking at the branch along the drivers side (back of the head you will be able to see it as soon as you peel apart melted wires. hope that helps.

  1. Using sprocket installation tool No. 6792 or equivalent, press the crankshaft sprocket onto the crankshaft.
  2. Install the camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts. Install and tighten the sprocket retaining bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (101 Nm).

Fig. Fig. 4: Proper camshaft sprocket alignment for timing belt installation

  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket. Set the crankshaft sprocket to Top Dead Center (TDC) by aligning the notch on the sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing.
  2. Set the camshafts to align the timing marks on the sprockets.
  3. Move the crankshaft to 1 / 2 notch before TDC.
  4. Install the timing belt starting at the crankshaft, then around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets, and then around the tensioner pulley.
  5. Move the crankshaft sprocket to TDC to take up the belt slack.
  6. Install the tensioner to the engine block, but do not tighten.
  7. Using a torque wrench on the tensioner pulley apply 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm) of tighten to the tensioner pulley.
  8. With torque being applied to the tensioner pulley, move the tensioner up against the tensioner pulley bracket and tighten the fasteners to 275 inch lbs. (31 Nm).
  9. Remove the tensioner plunger pin. The tension is correct when the plunger pin can be removed and replaced easily.
  10. Rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions and recheck the timing marks. Wait several minutes and then recheck that the plunger pin can easily be removed and installed.
  11. Reinstall the front timing belt cover(s).
  12. Reinstall the engine mount bracket.
  13. Reinstall the right engine mount.
  14. Remove the floor jack from under the vehicle.
  15. Install the crankshaft damper and tighten to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
  16. Install the accessory drive belts and adjust to the proper tension.
  17. Install the right inner splash shield.
  18. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  19. Check for leaks and proper engine operation.

SOURCE: replace water pump cost

the time to replace is 3.8 hours. multiply this by the shop flat rate and this will give you a labor rate. call some local parts houses to find the price on the pump, dodge gets around 98dollars hope this helps, depending on when you last changed the timing belt you ight want consider doing this at this time as it has to come off to change the water pump. this is an interference engige if the belt breaks it will damage the valves, you should only have to pay for the belt. hope this helps if not ghet back tome and i'll try to help you further. please rate my fix, as i strive to the best Thanks Ray

SOURCE: 1996 dodge stratus stalls upon stopping and imediate starting.

If this happens when you keep your foot off the brake and never come to a complete stop the lock-up clutch in the trans is not releasing. As soon as you come to a full stop the car stalls, right? Idling in neutral or moving the car is fine? Could also be the IAC (Idle Air Control) motor. It's on the throttle body. Clean it and adjust along with the idle speed.

SOURCE: how do i put freon to a 1996 dodge stratus

You can get a can of R134a with a detachable/reusable hose that includes a pressure guage. Some of the newer brands that advertise "colder faster" are actually worth the extra cash.

When you lift the hood of your car, the refrigeration lines are on your left hand side. A silver tube is sticking up near the back but in easy reach with a black screw on cap. Simply unscrew the cap and save it for replacement later. The hose will attach easily and follow the directions on the can (typically you move the can in some form while pulling the trigger to add gas.) Make sure the car is running and the A/C is on max.

Remember to watch the pressure guage and release the trigger any time the pressure gets near the red line. It may take a few cycles of pulling the trigger and then releasing to get it to fill completely.

I have a 96 Dodge Stratus. With 2.0 engine. Replaced water pump and now check engine light on pulling up code po1390 a timing code and it still bubbleing when i run it and losing water Did timing juup

Did you let it run with cap off for long time with heater on while you refilled system? Usually let rad fan come on and off 2 or 3 times with cap off to bleed system properly.

I have a 96 dodge stratus es with the 2.5L V-6. When I do the engine code thing with the key the check engine light flashes 21 times. What does that mean?

You have to count the number of flashes between delays. For example, the light flashes twice, pauses briefly, then flashes 4 times. This problem code is 24. The end of the trouble code is 55, which is 10 flashes so you have at least 2 trouble codes on your vehicle.

Yes, the engine mounts and bell housings are the same.
The swap should be straight forward, however be sure to swap all the vaccum controls and emission system from the 2.6L.

Have fun!

Car leaks a lot of antireeze near front of engine

It sounds like a bad water pump. Start by checking hose first. then check thermostat gasket , then check water pump. Replace radiator cap. It is not releasing pressure causing the pressure to find the weakest point somewhere else.
