99 Silverado 4-wheel drive not engaging

2007, had a grinding noise in the front end. Replaced brake pads. Not the problem. Dealership decided it was the transfer case. $1800. Nope, not the problem, still have grinding noise. Finally, they replaced front pinion bearings. Eureka! no grinding noise. They put my old transfer case back on. 2009, I got stuck in my front yard and noticed my front wheels did not spin. Dealership looked at the 4-wheel drive and assured me it was working. Later, I placed it in 4-wheel drove a little way up the road (gravel), stopped and then pressed the accelerator fast and the front tires did not spin. Back to the dealership. Well guess what? The first and second clutch in the transfer case is bad. So they say. Can you tell if the clutches are bad without looking inside the transfer case? When I try to engage the 4-wheel drive, I can hear a click as if it did engage. Any ideas what could be wrong? Also, I'm the second owner, bought it 2001 and I have rarely used the 4-wheel drive.

I am in the same boat, but I feel I am way past that point, as I am afraid to drive my truck at all! pulled the jeep out and waiting for warm weather.

Got a second opinion on transfer case. Trany shop says everything is good, (4 wheel drive does engage the front wheels), but transfer case oil was very black. Changed the oil. He will check it in about a month to see if there is any change in color. He said it maybe going out. Also was having AC issues. Same dealership said it would cost $800. to repair AC unit (compressor, accumulator, orfice tube). Went to an auto AC/Heat shop. Replaced a charge port fitting and cabin air filters. $76./parts and recharge. So far it is still cooling.

It does not seem that sufficient diagnosis was done. No, you cant give a specific diagnosis like that without tearing unit down. It's likely that they told you the most common failure and left it at that. Likely there is a problem with your unit...I think this becomes more of a trust issue than a mechanical one. A second opinion from an independent reputable shop may help but either way, you need to have it fixed. In not using it much, it makes me wonder how it got worn.
good luck

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

Why do I hear grinding noises while driving?

Hit in the rear axle may have damaged bearings or brake parts. Jack up the side you hear noise from, put on stand, then have helper rotate wheel while you look underneath and listen to see where noise is coming from. Use length of old fuel or heater hose, one end in ear, to locate exactly where noise comes from.

I have a 99 durango. it makes a grinding noise in the front end. if i just lay my foot on the brake pedal it stops. I have replaced the wheel bearing on both sides and checked the differential bearin

check to see how much pad is on the break pads also remove the rust around the disk as this some times catches on the pads making a scraping noise hope this helps ivan

Rubbing/grinding sound in front end/ drivetrain

from your description it is possible that the low brake pad warning tag is activated indicating tat the brake pads are worn out
it is a small tag that rubs on the disc just before the pads damage the rotor
as sound travels it could be a rear wheel with the problem
to check , take the vehicle to an accredited brake specialist shop and have the pad thickness checked
to be safe the thickness has to be 1/8 " or better

I was wondering on a alero 99 , i replaced the brakes and a caliper and fixed my brake lines but my abs light is on but it sounds like a airplain when u drive their is no shaking or grinding in the front...

YEP BAD WHEEL BEARING WILL MAKE A ROARING LIKE NOISE WHILE IN MOTION.BAD WHEEL COULD PUT DRAG ON WHEEL WHICH CAUSE ABS LIGHT TO COME ON.YOUR WHEEL BEARING HAS THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR BUILT INTO IT.SO IF WHEEL BEARING BAD THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PART OF ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WILL CAUSE ABS LIGHT TO COME ON IF WHEEL BEARING BAD.MAKE SURE FRONT BRAKE PADS INSTALLED CORRECTLY IF NOT. YOU WILL GET TERRIBLE WHEEL NOISE ALSO.

Grinding noise front end.

I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.

(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)

Noise when in 4 x 4

Bad news... It sounds like you have a broken/stripped axle. I would start at the wheel and start disassembling from the outside in. It may just be a stripped spline in the spindle.
