Question about 1998 Dodge Neon

Gas pedal wont go down once in gear

I have a 98 dodge caravan. it starts and runs fine. while in park or neutral the gas pedal operates just fine. once you put it in R,D,2,or 1 the gas pedal barely goes down. if it is in park and neutral you can push it to the floor with no problem, it feels like there is something under the pedal that is keeping it fron going to the floor. i have checked all the cables cleaned the throttle body replaced the TPC cleaned and checked the IAC drained the trany pan, and replaced the trany filter ive looked at the linkage and the throttle cables and none of them cross one another or are damaged.

I would check a few things. first the engine mounts. make sure the engine isn't rocking over. second cruise control ? if it has cruise control I would unhook the cable to the throttle from the cruise control and see if that was the issue. some times the control box will pull in deceleration mode and stick there. also the decelerator valve on the throttle body may be defective.

My 1998 Dodge caravan (3.0 v6 with 3 speed trans) was running fine until one morning I start the van and put it in reverse...nothing, put in drive, 2 and 1 and nothing. It can be pushed in every gear...

With the van in park or neutral with e-brake on, and engine running, pull the transmission fluid dipstick, notice there's no fluid on the dipstick. Put a quart of transmission fluid in the dipstick tube, with e-brake still on, put the van in gear. R or D, and see does the van try to move against the brake. If it tries to move, engine speed drops, put it back in neutral or park and check the fluid level again. If it's still low, put in a little more till it's to the full mark.. Done. Check under the van and find the area where fluid is dripping out and fix it. If it's the pan gasket, replace it. Replace the filter while the pan is down.

2005 DODGE CARAVAN STALLS OUT AFTER YOU FILL IT UP WITH GAS

When filling the tank, stop filling when the pump clicks off. It sounds like you are overfilling the tank getting gas onto the built in evaporator.

Just stop filing when pump clicks off.

Car starts in neutral not in park

I would look at the operation and/or adjustment of the gear selector and the transmission range sensor (often mistakenly referred to as a 'neutral safety switch").

I say adjustment because the Neutral gate is mid-range of the selector, while the Park gate is at one end of the range. Thus, if the selector mechanism and the sensor position are not properly aligned, the sensor amy more accurately report the Neutral gate than the Park gate, resulting in cranking in the Neutral position but not while in Park.

Do you sometimes have to wiggle the shifter in Neutral to get it to crank?

My 1998 dodge caravan won't stay running. starts up but shuts down instantantly or when i take my foot off the gas pedal,

ok i have a 1998 durango with the 5.2L 318 engine. had trouble with a bad cell in my battery. I went out bought an optima red top battery for it 800cca. put it in and had same trouble. No start without putting foot on gas. wouldn't stay running without holding foot on gas. CPU has to relearn it's programming once you unplug it for long periods of time. mine was without power for about 2-3 weeks till i got new battery. Start with this.. first check under air filter make sure a squirrel hasn't made a mess under your air filter and it's clogging the air intake. Then pull off the lid to your injector cover ( the screw down lid coming from the air box ( with air filter in it) to "carb") make sure all your cables move freely. put that all back together and close hood. Start truck with foot slightly on gas pedal to get started. keep it at about 1k to 1500 rpm for about 1-2 minutes. Rev motor to about 2500rpm and let it die out if it will. Get out lock doors with key fob if you have it. if not make sure to lock doors. ( trust me it worked for me) let sit for 5 minutes. come back out and unlock door and relock door 3 times with fob ( if you have it ) or key if you don't have a fob. Then unlock it with the key and enter vehicle. Start truck as before and keep it around 1k to 1500 rpm again for about 30 seconds rev it up and should keep running. Mine did. I think the iac was stuck from sitting and has now since loosened up.
Good luck hope ti works for you.

Symptoms look like a faulty crank position sensor. Remove it and give it an inspection, if it looks OK give it a clean, especially the tip. Check the electrical connection so that it is free of dirt and corrosion. If there is a spacer beneath the CPS make sure it has not got thicker due to rust, wire brush it - the CPS tip is very sensitive to crank ring proximity. Check that there is electrical continuity between the CPS electrical connections - infinite resistance = broken circuit = dead CPS. Reinstall it and see if sorts any problems out. If no improvement change the CPS for a new one.

No starting, no clicking, intermittant

I believe your vehicle uses a starter relay as opposed to a solenoid. The posting says 93 but the heading says 98 but you should be dealing with a starter relay. Also if you have an oil leak that can lead to starter failure on these vehicles. The starter relay is on the passenger side fenderwell near the shock tower.

I am having trouble with my speedometer not working occasionally and now my seat belt light is coming on sometimes too. Is this the instrument panel cluster? Or something else? 1998 Dodge Neon. Backstory is as follows: -We take very good care of it and have one dedicated mechanic. -It has only had two owners; my parents and I. -We replaced the battery 2 months ago. -Mechanic checked to make sure the speedometer sensor was working. -We have had issues with the radio for years where it will randomly turn on and off, typically brought on by a stuffed trunk OR wet weather. -The speedometer works until we hit a bump and then the needle flies up and down or sometimes just stops working all together. -Mechanic has made mention of there being some Chrysler specific battery cable that is a smaller side cable and it is not in good condition. -Currently, my problem is that I can't find an old 1998 Dodge Neon in the salvage yard because yards are doing a lot of 2002 and newer vehicles and automatically crushing the others. The meat and potatoes of my question is what direction do I go in? And what of these symptoms ties to each other? And will adding new solder to the points on the panel fix it or is it something else? I'm trying to find least expensive to most expensive options and I'm rather handy but can't drop an engine or transmission or anything so keep this in mind. My handiness ends at resoldering the pins BUT I do have a mechanic I trust, but I fear that maybe I'm not combining symptoms properly. I have the money to repair an item I KNOW is wrong but not to chicken hunt around for problems.
