1986 jetta oil pump location and replacement/knock sensor
Was told the oil pump was bad and needed replacement, not sure where it is located or how to change, also said the knock sensor needed replacement..what is this?..and where is it located
Not sure to the reasoning, was just told they both needed replacement..the car is a 1.8L 8v engine, will crank over, has lots of spark just no oil pressure(I was told), checked timing at the belt and Distributor Everything is where it should be figure the knock sensor may have retarded the timing, that is what they do if i am correct...sorry first post was done by the G/F...she means well..lolNot sure to the reasoning, was just told they both needed replacement..the car is a 1.8L 8v engine, will crank over, has lots of spark just no oil pressure(I was told), checked timing at the belt and Distributor Everything is where it should be figure the knock sensor may have retarded the timing, that is what they do if i am correct...sorry first post was done by the G/F...she means well..lol
Digi 1, GL,...My real question was with little info I currently have would this be a good start? Digi 1, GL,...My real question was with little info I currently have would this be a good start?
"the car is a 1.8L 8v engine"...As I stated the original post was by the G/F trying to help out, I replaced the oil pump/ knock sensor, After cleaning out the base pan and tube, I also re-calibrated the timing added new plugs, wires, Distributor cap and button also as a precaution replaced water pump and timing belt as well....Car fired right up and runs fine

What kind of oil where you using in your vdub ? Anything other than 15 40 Diesel grade is not recommended by Volkswagen for all engines 97 and older. Like "passatsyncro" mentioned you have to drop the oil pan and two bolts hold the pump on. As for the Knock sensor it is located on the passenger side (right side of engine) right beside the timing belt cover, it should be held on with one bolt 10mm I think.

Need more info please to help you, do you have a 1.8 ? 1.6 diesel ? if its a diesel is it turbo or non turbo ? assuming its the original engine, you didn't say what model gti or cl ect. Also if its a 1.8 gas does it have the digi 1 or digi 2 intake system. The oil pump is located above the oil pan. remove the oil pan. i believe there are 2 13mm bolts securing oil pump. please, if youy can, let me know the reason for oil pump replacement. The oil pump is located above the oil pan. remove the oil pan. i believe there are 2 13mm bolts securing oil pump. please, if youy can, let me know the reason for oil pump replacement.

Re: 1986 jetta oil pump location and replacement/knock...
Oil pump is in the oil pan and if you have no or low oil pressure replace pump before doing anything with knock sensor. knock sensor is more or less a microphone and listens for spark knock but will set codes for any knocking or tapping noise which is commonly heard if oil pump is malfunctioning

1.) The CKP sensor is located on the lower right (passenger-side) front of the engine, near the crankshaft pulley. 2.) The ECM is located behind the glove box. It is a rectangular-shape with 5 electrical connectors, each of which has many wires. 3.) Do this instead; unplug CKP sensor, check the yellow/black wire for 12v with ignition on; if not present, repair wire between CKP sensor and PGM-FI relay. Next, measure voltage between CKP yellow wire and ground; there should be about 5v, if not, check for 5v from PCM connector A7; if present, repair wire between ECM and CKP. Next, check voltage between CKP yellow/black wire and brown/yellow wire; if not, repair wire between CKP and ground G101. Next, check for continuity between ECM A7 and ground; if present, repair wire for short-to-ground. If all OK, replace the CKP sensor and with an advanced scan tool, reset the ECM, clear the CKP learned pattern, relearn idle and CKP pattern. If issue not resolved, update ECM software (if not up-to-date) or substitute a known-good ECM. if I'm not mistaken, the knock sensor is mounted on the transmission bell close to the motor and detects the flywheel position. It is possible that the valve cover gaskets might be leaking from the bottom side and dripping onto the knock sensor, but it is also possible that the leak might be from the rear main seal of the motor. If that is the case, you will have to drop the ****** to replace the seal. If the knock sensor was bad your vehicle would not start at all, just crank. Try to wipe all the old oil with rags and look very closely where it gets oily again
the two knock sensors are located under the manifold. When i did this replacement. I was told it was a four hour job. It actually took 1 hr 45 min. very easy to do. Be sure to seal new sensors with Black RTV.
yes it sounds like it,but check your oil too just to be sure ,your oil pump is in the oil pan take off oil pan u should see it,it will be on the sump end of the pan(caution) the oil pump on most vehicles are connected to the distributor so u might have to retime in eng after u do this,Hope this helps and good luck
normally you will find if you replace the filters it should solve the prob although if it does not then fuel pump acumulator valve might be faulty or vacuum hose to it leaking ( located on the end of the fuel rail to injectors)
Under the intake manifold. Make sure you get the harness for the knock sensors. and clean out all of the rust and junk you're going to find donw in the holes before and after you replace the sensors.
the knock sensors are located below the intake plenum,or,upper intake manifold as some call it, they screw into the lower intake, the front one is sensor 1, the rear is sensor 2. it is wise to change both if you have some miles.since you are going to be buying a gasket set to do this job.the sensors are cheaper than the gaskets.
Unfortunately, the knock sensor is located UNDER the intake. You have to pull the
intake off. I had a mechanic do mine. He said its best to replace both
because they both corrode. (2 sensors, intake gasket, labor ($250)
I'm trying to find this as well...
I've been told its on the back of the engine above the oil filter, however, I cannot locate it...
I have the replacement sensor from Autozone in my hand ($104.XX) yet cannot find where it is supposed to go. There is a random bolt above a freeze plug, I'm wondering if it is supposed to be in that location. Not sure that this is even the original motor... eek!
