Hi,have been using my car normally, this afternoon however, for some reason, i start the car and cannot shift from parking gear to drive or reverse. it seems locked into position. i am pushing down on break pedal whilst trying to shift out of parking, but nothing happens. any ideas?
I suggest you get one of those manuals people get nowadays to do it yourself.. My nephew use it to repair my car
and it's totally repaired now. Here's the website he got it from. www.reliable-store.com
SOURCE: key gets stuck in ignition
My daughter drives a Suzuki, my solution to her is: while the gear shift lever is in park, lightly put pressure on the gear shift lever, through the park position and while pressing the gear shift towards park light rock left to right while trying to remove the key.
The interlock between the transmission and the ignition switch needs to be adjusted/ repaired or replaced.
SOURCE: Since I replaced the battery my car's engine shuts down.
Did you resolved the problem?
I also have a Grand Vitara, and just replaced the battery and once I turn the vehicle on, it will shut off.
What it is going on?
Thanks

Hey mate, Had exactly the same problem. Suggest you take the car to your local auto transmission repair centre (not holden) and they can check the electrical diagnostics - if it the Transmission inhibitor Switch (as it was on mine - if so should cost you no more than 1 hour labour and about $75 - $95 for the switch.

Ok what you are experiencing is referred to as a shift interlock problem. First thing I would do is check to make sure that when you apply the brakes that the brake lights are coming on. There is a switch mounted on the brake pedal that activates the lights and also dis-engages the shift interlock. If this switch is bad the brake lights wont work and the shifter will not move. Replacing the switch will restore normal operation. If you have a copy of the owners manual you should be able to locate the instructions on how to bypass the shift interlock. If not then look at the cover around the shifter and you should be able to see a plastic oval shaped plastic plug. Pry the plug out and use a small screwdriver to press down on the interlock and it should come out of park. You can shift freely when out of park but remember you will have to perform that every time you need to come out of park until repaired. Hope this was helpful and good luck.
