Unusual starting problem, Nissan sentra '96 GXE 179K

This has been happening since last couple of years. Car won't start under these circumstances. Engine cranks but no fire.

1. Start the car and pull out on the driveway and try to start it next day, it won't start. Driveway has a slope.
2. In winter, drove it back from the office on Friday and won't start on Monday. It started ok on Friday.
3. A cold day after an unusually warm day, car won't start.
4. While starting, if by chance I turn my key back off when the vehicle was about to start...it won't start the next try.
5. Left the car in the garage for 10days in winter...engine cranks, won't start.

All these situations have occurred more than once and here is what I do to start.
1. Take the fuel pump fuse out.
2. Crank the engine for few secs twice or thrice..sometimes it seems about to start.
3. See if I can start the engine just for few secs and then immediately insert the fuse back..and the vehicle starts with some hesitation.
Trying to find the cause for this...

Thanks a lot.

Yes, I did tried that, in fact it takes longer to start in that case and so after couple of trials I just take the fuse out. Is it possible to find out which injector is leaking by an OBD tool?.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Next time it happens put the gas to the floor and see if you get the same results you did by pulling pump fuse. It's possible that your injectors are leaking and flooding the engine while standing. In cranking with no fuel supply you are clearing cylinders.

Probably not because the tool reads if the injector is getting pulsesw, not if it is sealing correctly when off. I'd try to take a look at the spark plugs to see if any have fuel on them after you crank once in no-start. "On the floor" likely would take longer because injectors are adding fuel while you are trying to remove it.

Sentra 1.8 gxe crank will not start

Although you may think that you are clearly stating the problem, I will point out a number of reasons that a Nissan Sentra will not start:
  1. No key in the ignition.
  2. Key placed in the wrong hole.
  3. No gasoline in car.
  4. Wrong key in the ignition.
  5. Attempting to start the car using the power of your mind.
I'm fairly sure that none of the scenarios above apply to your circumstance but, without a more thorough explanation of the circumstances surrounding the failure of your Nissan Centra (of unspecified year and engine) to start as you would like.
Please state the YEAR of your Nissan Centra, as well as which ENGINE it has, and please describe the circumstances under which the failure occurs, as well as stating any precursors to the failure, and any insights you may have as to conditions which may have caused it (such as "car has been running rough since 1989" or "drove the car off a cliff recently and the battery exploded).
Once you provide a thorough explanation of the problem you are trying to solve, I'm sure that if I'm still clueless about the issue, someone else will be able to answer your question.

Starter makes grinding noise when starting car. Sometimes it does no engage to start the car. Have replaced the started twice in the last year on my 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE Auto Trans.

check the condition of the teeth on the ring gear of the engine. They can become burred and cause improper engagement of the starter pinion. Check the adjustment of the pinion action.

A wet air filter was put into my nissan sentra gxe with a 1.8L engine. It will start and idle, but won't rev much past 2000 rpm's. The filter was rmoved and the car sat in the sun all day hopi

never wash or wet an air filter as it closes up the pores in the paper element
fit a new element and then run the fault codes or reset the ECM using a scan tool

I own a 2003 nissan sentra gxe-i have a couple of issues i have had for at least a year. About every other week i can't get my car to start it turns over but won't fire up. Last year I had a crank shaft...

as far as the starting problem sounds like the fuel pump may be momentarily seizing. the cooling problem is kinda your fault. no laying blame lol. when you filled it with antifreeze there a bleeder port you have to open to release the trapped air in the system its usually found near the thermostat housing.

Just hit 180,00mi and battery and brake light diming

Have the battery tested and the alternator tested, the other issue may have a code stored to help point in the right direction, at that many miles things are bound to wear out.
