I would pay more attention to the air flow sensor and mass air flow sensor, putting this on a diagnostic machine will pinpoint the errors stored on the onboard computer. both sensors can be cleaned by a competent mechanic, most mechanics don't want to, they prefer just to swap items out these days because of costs. get a reading, then you will know for sure. good luck.
If your transmission is a 700r4 (4l60) you have a reverse band that engages when you want to go in reverse. since it drives forward your low reverse clutch and your fwd clutch are working. This leaves the band which was probably slipping now is not engaging.
With the engine off, try to put it into a gear. If it goes into a gear, then your clutch is bad and needs replaced. If you still can't get it into gear this way, you probably have a busted detent plate which requires the transmission to be removed and serviced.

I HAVE A 93 BUICK SKYLARK CUSTOM
AND I HAD THE SAME HESITATION.
I CHAGED GAS FILTER, AIR FILTER, AND USE SEA FOME IN MY GAS TANK AND USE IT ALSO TO CLEAN THE INTAKE SYSTOM, AND IT HELPED ALOT. TWO MONTHS DOWN THE LINE HADE THE SAME HESITATION AND IT WAS ONE OF THE INISION COIAL PACK WAS NOT GIVING THE ELETRICAL SPARK TO THE PLUG. I CHECK IT BY PULLING THE CABLE OFF THE SPARK PLUG WITH THE CAR RUNNING AND FOUND THE ONE THAT WAS NOT GIVING SPARK. I REPLACED THE PACK FOR THAT CILINDERS PLUG AND THE PROBLEM WAS GONE.
