I have wired on a pig tail for pulling a pop up trailer. I went to the rear of the truck and fould the cluster of wiring before it breaks and goes to each rear light section. I color coded the wiring for yellow as left bliker, green as right blinker and brwon as tail lights. Nothing seems to work right and I can't figure it out.
Please help, David
I have a 98 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer, 4 flat. I have a dual axle motorcycle trailer with power brakes that requires a 7 round. I did all the wiring for the power brake unit and that works fine. The running lamps work, however the left tail light and brake light do not. I tested the pins on the 4 way (I kept the original 4-way and used that to connect to the 4 way adapter on the 7 round) and the yellow lead isn't working. I then followed the yellow it up to see if I got power at the first connection point (grey plastic circular box that ultimately appears to lead into the tail light housing. I didn't get anything. I have the 7 round grounded to the frame. Suggestions?

hello,
yes it is replaceable, it should be under the dash lower panel, but the fast blinking sounds like a bulb is not working or a bad connection, if you replace the flasher the you may want to make sure that you have the electronic version as they are more reliable. and the other thing is to make sure that you have a good ground in your wiring and that all the connections are dry, tight, and installed properly by color code
James ,look for crosion in wires or plug on trailer, and broken wires and yes flasher is replaceable ,they do tend to burn out ,replace with original (OEM) some aftermarket ones (mechanical) type can cause there own problems.
Your truck may have had the factory trailer tow package, but that did
not come with a wiring connector in that year. There should be a wire
harness under the rear of the truck near the center of the bumper with 7
wires of the following colors/characteristics -
Red/Orange - +12V Battery (Thick Wire) From fuse #8 (40A)
Black/Orange - Tail Markers (Thick Wire)
Light Blue - Trailer Brakes (Thick Wire)
Violet/Black - Backup Lights (Thin Wire)
Dark Green/Red - Left Stop/Turn - (Thin Wire)
Brown/Red - Right Stop/Turn - (Thin Wire)
Black - Ground - (Thick Wire)
Under the dash, the brake controller wiring should be -
Sounds like you have a hot to ground short somewhere on the trailer trace wires on trailer for bare wire.Look closely around the lights that are on the trailer for any frayed wires and any wires that are touching metal.
On your wireing pig tail do you have one wire going to your brake lites and one tail lites, Then the ground Make sure you have fourway bulbs in your trailer. Good luck to you.
RE: check engine light, stop by any good parts store and have an OBII scan (fault scan). That will pull codes that will identify what triggered light. RE: Brake lights, check wiring in and around tail lights (especially if you have trailer wiring)
IT SOUNDS LIKE PROBLEM IS WITH TRAILER WIRING,NOT THE TRUCK..IF NOT BLOWING FUSE UNTIL YOU PLUG IN TRAILER,CHECK TRAILER WIRING FOR SHORTS IN WIRING,CHECK FOR CORRODED LIGHT SOCKETS,BAD GROUND CONNECTIONS..LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND
