Try un- attaching the battery. Like vw the bmw can go into limp mode with any battery problems. You might have to clear any fault codes though. While your at it make sure the terminals on battery are clean. Think you might be surprised.

Just replaced my key the ignition switch and the esl in my c230 98 Benz. Worked for about a week and now the esl will not unlock the steering or start the car. Is there any way to reset the esl? All three components are new I don't understand the problem .what causes the esl not to engage when you put the key in the ignition
Absolutely. Could also be that the smart key has a dead battery or has been compromised by moisture, etc.
Can you still lock & unlock the car with the smart key? If so, the battery is not dead, and you should look next at the ignition itself. Is there any response when you put the key in? Can you turn it? Are there signs that your battery is drained (dim/no lights work, etc)? If you are getting no response when you put the key in and you can turn it, and it still works to unlock your car and you can verify that you have battery power, start by checking your fuses. The ignition and starter fuses would be the first to check.
First of all, have battery "Load tested", then double check alternator is charging which I assume it is. If battery weak, replace it, but remember, it should be load tested when fully charged. If not battery, then you'll need to check for amperage draw on system when everything shut off, and isolate circuit causing draw. If you get that far & aren't sure how to do it, get back to us.
I had the same problem with mine. Disconnect the power seat moduale underneath the seats. Recharge the battery and shouldn't happen again. Providing the battery hasn't worn down past the charging point. Worst case you will have to get a new battery. If you google C320 battery drains you will see hundreds of other peoples posts.
