ABS light on meansd your car has the obd2 code problem, you need a scan tool to test out the code, and i know this tool can help you diagnose the code and delete/reset it. Or you can take your car to the local dealer to check out it, then they will tell you how to fix it.

Sounds like the whole shifting unit. It has a printed circuit strip unit that usually goes bad or a switch on the side of the transmission. What code is showing? You need to have it scanned at your VW dealership to correctly diagnose your exact problem

It must have been weather related. When it warmed up, the key worked and the steering column unlocked.

you might want to look at the wireing under the floor mat on the driver side. there is a well that water collects in and eats throught the wires. i had this happen to me and found 6 or 7 wires that rotted tru. i fixed the wirs and then used rtv(silacon calk) to cote all the wires to protect them frome more water damage. hope this helps.
