Clicking noise coming from front right tire on a '01 Dodge Ram

Would this be ball bearings or possible the hub? Also how about a ballpark $ figure to fix?

  • deputydan14 Mar 23, 2009

I can hear the clicking whenever I I'm starting to accelerate. I just had the front brake replaced within the last month or so. If it is the bearings what should I look for and what would be the best way to repair/replace them? Also thanks for responding Josh.

when does it click when you stop? when you hit a bump? the bearings are in the hub and it is possible, it could be joints or brakes pads loose too.

if it is the bearing you can do it yourself.

As long as your sure its comeing from the front right tire proceed
to get to the bearing you have to take the wheel off first, rotate the rotor to see if you can hear the bearing.
remove wheel remove brakes/caliper/caliper bracket/rotor remove cotter pin/axle nut remove 4 bolts from wheel bearing assy unplug electrical connector for ABS, if has it tap axle end lightly to dislodge fron wheel bearing assy may need pry bar and hammer or air chisel to remove wheel bearing assy from vehicle clean orifice well and installation is the opposite to inspect the bearings take it out , and look for loose or stuck bearings, if it rolls freely chances are its not bad. . if water or dirt gets inside it can ruin the bearing. make sure you pack the bearing with grease. if the bearing is bad just buy a new one. i cant guarantee it is a bearing so good luck.

Dodge ram started making a grinding noise and it silences when brakes are applied? possible causes?

Sean:

Check the condition of your wheel bearings. Park the truck and squat next to one of the front wheels. Grab the top of the wheel and attempt to rock the top of the wheel outward and inward. Rock it four or five times using all of your weight to pull and push the top of the tire. Any movement of the tire or any noise (clicking or grinding) will signal either impending bearing failure, or ball joint failure.

Thumping, grinding noise comes from right front side

most likely a front hub [wheel bearing ]going bad but jack up front side that is causing problem and try to move tire in and out with hands at top and bottom of tire and listen and feel for noise or excess movement it to much movement remove tire an check the upper and lower ball joints as well as the shock/strut but check brakes grinding can also mean pads are metal to rotor but usually grinding and thumping is related to a bad hub

I need to replace the front axle knuckels on my 2004 dodge ram 2500 diesel. Can I take the king pin out and split the ball joint and the whole hub and axle will come out.

Yes. But it may be easier to remove the caliper and unbolt the hub and bearing from the back, sliding the hub, bearing, and axle out all together without disturbing the ball joints. Saving quite a bit of time. Please rate my assistance and leave a testimonial.

I have a grinding noise coming from my front left tire! Sounds like the front end is gonna fall out from under the truck. Could that be ball joints, tie rod ends? When it makes this noise it feels like the...

Sounds like the noise is a bad bearing to me. If the ball joints or tie rod ends were bad, you would have irregular steering or in an extreme case, the front end would fall apart and you would lose steering abilities.

Remove front axle from differential on 2003 dodge ram

That works fine on a relatively new vehicle but one that has run in salt etc you'll save a lot of time if you remove the steering knuckle completey by separating lower ball joint and outer tie rod end ball joint and bring the whole steering knuckle to a bench to separate the hub/bearing. Soak everything with penetrant, loosen the bolts a few turns and try hitting right on the bolt heads. I also made a very sharp wedge from a chisel and rammed it hard on the other side to seoarate the hub. It will finally come apart then you'll see all the **** that was binding it due to an alumininum knuckle re-acting with a steel hub. Clean the hole and grease everything and fit new bearings

Clicking noise in front end 2001 dodge ram 4x4

I have a 2002 Dodge 1500 Ram 4x4, quad cab and had the same problem. In 2wd the clicking was constant, in 4wd it would go away. Also I had no 4wd while in 4wd, found that out after a snow storm. I took my truck to a buddies garage (a Dodge mechanic), he said this is a common problem. He pulled the drivers side wheel, hub, axle and stub axle. The stub axle splines where it goes into the CV joint and and the internal splines in the CV joint were gone. Almost smooth even. The wheel bearing was completely wore out too. I ended up replacing the hub assembly, both the inner and outer axles. Not a cheap fix either I have about $600 repair bill, but it's back on the road now smooth and quite.
