2000 grand prix w/auto transmission wont shift into overdrive

run the fault codes as there may be a problem i he VSS or TCM module

make sure your transmission fluid level not low if fluid level okay. other possible causes for transmission wont shift out of second could have stuck or faulty first and second shift valve.code scan for faulty VSS SPEED SENSOR.

sounds like the transmission is going out or messing up, could be low on transmission fluid too

I have a 2000 Grand Prix 3.8
the transmission shifts fine till it gets hot then it starts shifting hard into gears can anyone tell me what might be causing this.

Please check your transmission fluid level. After the engine is warm pull the transmission stick and make sure the level is close to the full line and that the transmission fluid is red and not brown. You may have to change your transmission fluid and screen. If you plan to do it yourself I can advise you on how to change it step by step or you can take it to a transmission shop or dealership for a transmission tune-up. Good Luck

it can be many things.make sure to check transmission fluid.if all is good.your governor valve sticking.or got worn gears.you have sticking or binding accumulator valve. 3 -2 control valve - tv limit 1 -2 or 2 - 3 shift valve train - sticking or binding throttle valve and plunger.2 -4 servo seals leaking - damage or worn 3 - 4 accumulator piston.the 2 3 4 clutches worn or the 3rd roller clutch is damage or missing bearings.Try changing transmission fluid and filter.put some of the transmedic transmission conditioner in fluid.dont over fill tranny.if you got sticking shift valves .it will loosen them up.so it will shift better.if it dont help you have internal transmission problems. .

You can till you burn up the transmission. The car not going to 4th could be your in the limp mode, there is something wrong with the engine or transmission and the ECM has put the car in limp mode. If there is a Auto Zone around your area, have the car scanned for DTC codes causing your ECM to run under limp mode. Keep an eye on your transmission fluid, if it started to burn ( dark Burgundy color ) service the transmission and hope you did not burn too much of your clutch in your clutch pack. the 4th gear clutch shaft has very fine teeth that wear over time, if vehicle has high miles, this shaft may have failed, a sprag may have failed, the 4th gear selenoid may be bad, the 4th gear clutches could be fried, the valve body may be leaking / venting clutch apply pressure, the range selector may be off causing the VCM to believe you are in 3rd.
