1998 Audi A6 sunroof is will close only half way.

I just replaced the battery in my A6 and today I went to open the sunroof, it opened, but when I went to close it, it only closed half way.

No, I looked down there as you suggested, but there is no sign of anything in the tracks. On top of that there are no grinding sounds. Any other ideas? I am guessing it might be electrical and I will have to lose a leg at the dealership to get it fixed.

I have tried to "help it along" but with no luck. I did notice though that when it is fully open and I have the toggle switch to the fully open position that when I start incrementing it closed there are a few positions that the motor comes on, but the roof doesnt move. Only when I have it at the fully closed position will it move until it is about 1/3 of the way closed. Thanks, Rob.

No, it was in the fully closed position.

  • pyere1 Mar 25, 2009

No, I tried that for about 15 minutes and I got it no further.

  • pyere1 Mar 25, 2009

I will try that first thing when I get home from work tomorrow, Thanks for your help.

I unplug the battery for 5 minutes and when I plugged it back in, it worked! I am going to be cautious opening it up from now on unless I can find the root problem. I think I have to figure out what went wrong when installing the battery Audi's electrical systems seem to be very fragile.

Make it go back to the open position, look down the side of the tracks in the roof that the sun shade slides in and you will probable find the guides for the sunshade are jamming up the tracks. only way to replace them<4 one in each corner> is to remove the glass section and then close sunshade that will give access to the 4 guides which are available from dealer as a kit

the top does move back you said but do you hear any sounds when trying to move it forward? if so is it just an electric click or do you hear the top motor running? next if you do hear something grab a helper to operate the switch while you try to "help" the top back forward. then let me know your results. good luck ! Mike

was the top open when the battery was disconnected?

  • Anonymous Mar 25, 2009

it sounds like the top motor has lost it's timing if you keep bumping the switch and helping the top can you get it to close?

  • Anonymous Mar 25, 2009

lets try disconnecting the battery for about 5 min then reconnect and see what we have then

  • Anonymous Mar 25, 2009

my pleasure, let me know what you find, best of luck!

great ! what has happened was it lost it's clocking or timing. a cheap tool worth having is a memory saver it is about 10 bucks and all it does is plug into cig lighter and a 9v batter plugs on the other end. it is just enough to keep all memory in the car normally used to save radio programming but works well for all memory items. and yes you are correct VW / Audi cars are quite picky on things like that......but they are so cool. thanks for response.

97 audi a6 sunroof malfunction

Should work on this older model start engine and try with engine running at around 2000rpm and see what happens,i think you just have a low battery voltage here and it will not work like this but a good charge of the battery or running the engine should make it start working

How to work sunroof on audi a6 1998

I hope you solved the problem by now, but if not...
The switch is located up top by the interior reading lights. Just turn the knob counter clockwise and the sunroof opens. If you want to just vent, you pull down on the knob.

My sunroof won't close on my audi a6 wagon

My subaru came with a special wrench for working the sunroof manually, the access is under the dome light or the header control trim piece. I'm sure the VW has something similar.
