I have a 99 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo and the Part Time 4WD light stays on even when it is in 2WD, after driving for a while I can put it into Full Time 4WD then back to 2WD and the light goes out, if I try to do that as soon as the car is started it feels as if there is some resistence on the shifter, and it will not disengage unless I drive for a while...any thoughts?

Sounds like the splines on your transfer case gear are ground down

I questioned the dealer about my 2005 because mine was disengaging what I thought to be rough compared to what I was used to. They told me that I should shift the vehicle into Neutral before shifting the selector. I have also found that shifting between Reverse and Drive a couple of times while stopped has helped as well. By doing these couple of things, I have had no trouble since. I hope this helps as it might at least be something to try.

just a suggestion but I had this with another make fwd and I had to put inreverse and drive several hundred feet and tehn switch out while i was driving

My stepson also has a 99 grand cherokee and had the same problem they have a cable that connects the shifter to the transfer case. his problem was the cable broke. I changed it for him and works fine now but it's not easy to change so do not try to change it yourself unless you know what your doing.
