It only sputters when coming from a stop or trying to go faster. Just recently it has stalled on me twice from this. I have replaced the fuel filter but not sure what else it could be. Not even sure where the vacuum hose would be to see if there is a leak. Please help-This car is my baby
Not enough information here, but I would always replace the crank shaft position sensor first. Its at the rear of the engine, it senses grooves in the flywheel. Next I would check the fuel pump relay. Finally the Airflow meter.
One of the biggest problems with high mileage cars is that routine maintenance is not done. I seldom suggest things like cap, rotor, plug wires, because I (erroneously) assume they were replaced on a schedule. In light of the mileage, I would suggest a visual inspection of the distributor cap, and rotor, and replace the spark plugs and wires. If you buy a distributor cap and rotor, only buy Bosch brand, and you can forget about them for 100K miles. I recommend Bougicord (volvo OE) plug wires, also good for 100K+ miles. NGK, Bosch, or ND Copper plugs are all good, and will go 30K miles in a 240.

These are common symptoms that are usually associated with a stuck EGR valve. Clean it out, check that the system is in good working order, and make sure that all of your vacuum lines are tight.

Thank you. The engine has over 250,000 miles on it btw. Could the rotor and dist. cap cause a problem like this?
