Mitsubishi Outlander 2003 Service Engine Soon

I'm test driving this SUV and the service engine soon light pops on when slowing below 10 MPH and stays on at full stop. When I resume speed it turns itself off. I do not notice anything else wrong with this vehicle.

Is this a serious problem or is it ok to buy?

The dealer told me he thought it was a sensor. I drove the car home with me, but have not paid for it yet even though I signed all the papers. Does this sound like a serious problem? We don't have an AutoZone here but will try to find someone with an OBD II diagnostic tool. If I haven't paid for the car yet, can I drop it back off at the dealers and walk away, even though I signed papers and had it over night? I was told the car will not pass an emissions test if this ligh is on. Can they sell a car the won't pass emissions?

You'll need to know why the service engine light comes on, they can check this by using a OBD II diagnostic tool to find the trouble code stored in the pcm, ask them to run a check on it, or you can take it to a mechanic before you buy it to have them check over the vehicle for any minor or major problems.

What does the service engine light mean on a 2015 Ford Edge

Service Engine Soon

If the Service Engine Soon indicator light stays lit after you've started the engine, the On Board Diagnostics system (OBD) has detected a malfunction of the vehicle emissions control system. Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible.
If indicator light is blinking, an engine misfire may be occurring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Drive in a moderate fashion (avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration), and have your vehicle serviced immediately.*
The Service Engine Soon indicator light illuminates when the ignition is first turned on (prior to engine start) in order to test the bulb, as well as indicate whether the vehicle is ready for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing.
Normally, the Service Engine Soon light will stay on until the engine is cranked, then turn itself off if no malfunctions are present. However, if after 15 seconds this light blinks eight times, it means that the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing.Check this link out Gary.

Service engine soon light is on

go to Autozone, Oreilleys, Napa, etc. and they will test it for you for free. You will have to have a code scanner to solve your problem. You can go to a dealership or auto repair place but they will charge up to $150 just to check it for you.

Engine check light is on my mitsubishi chariot

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. There are test that need to be performed the find out the cause. The light will stay on until the problem is solved.

The first thing you should do is have the codes read. Most auto parts stores and many repair shops will do this for free. After you have them read you can post them back here and I can help you figure out what might be going on.
