Fuel tank removal - 1998 GMC Sierra

generic.

1. drain tank fully, or you will get a flood of fuel on YOU.
2. remove all hoses to tank/vents and wires, to pump rack top,.
3. remove filler neck hose to tank.
4. with a floor jack under tank, and wood protector to it, try to raise tank just a tad. (1/2?") (I have car at rear on jack stands first)
5. remove tank straps. now.
6. lower jack, done.

now out of shop manual quoted SX4 , near.

1) Relieve fuel pressure in fuel feed line according to
"Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure".
2) Disconnect negative cable at battery.
3) Remove fuel filler cap.
4) Insert hose of a hand operated pump into fuel filler
hose (1) and drain fuel in space "A" as shown in
figure.(this car has check valve at tank inlet)
Hoist vehicle, and remove clamp (2), fuel filler hose
(1) and breather hose (3) from fuel filler neck.
6) Remove exhaust center pipe referring to "Exhaust
Pipe and Muffler Removal and Installation in Section
1K".
7) Remove propeller shaft (For 4WD model) referring to
"Propeller Shaft Assembly Removal and Installation
in Section 3D".
8) Due to absence of fuel tank drain plug, drain fuel
tank by pumping fuel out through fuel tank filler.
Use hand operated pump device to drain fuel tank.
Disconnect quick joint (fuel pipe) (1) from fuel pipes
(2) referring to "Fuel Hose Disconnecting and
Reconnecting".
10) Support fuel tank (1) with jack (2) and remove its
mounting bolts (3)
Lower fuel tank a little as to disconnect wire harness
at connector (1)and ground wire (2), then remove
fuel tank

Removal and Installation

1. NOTE: Make sure fuel tank (9002) is properly supported during removal and installation procedures.
   Drain fuel from fuel tank .

1. Loosen fuel tank filler pipe clamp.

1. Remove fuel tank heat shield (9A032) from vehicle.

1. Support fuel tank .

1. Remove bolt from rear fuel tank support strap (9092) and remove rear fuel tank support strap .

1. Remove bolt from front fuel tank support strap and remove front fuel tank support strap .

1. Partially lower fuel tank to gain access and remove feed and return lines from sender ports. To disconnect push connect fittings, refer to Push Connect Fittings in this section.

1. Remove electrical connector from sender unit.

1. Remove fuel vapor hose from evaporative emission valve (9B593) .

1. Lower fuel tank from vehicle.

SECTION 310-01: Fuel Tank and Lines 2006 Freestyle/Five Hundred/Montego Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

All vehicles

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .

1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .

1. Drain the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .

All wheel drive vehicles

1. Remove the rear driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Section 205-00 .

All vehicles

1. Remove the muffler. For additional information, refer to Section 309-00 .

1. Disconnect the fuel vapor control tube assembly valve-to-fuel vapor tube quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .

1. Disconnect the fuel supply tube-to-fuel filter quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .

1. Disconnect the fuel vapor tube-to-fuel vapor control tube assembly valve quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .

1. Disconnect the fuel tank wiring harness electrical connector at the rear of the fuel tank.

1. Release the clamp and remove the fuel tank filler hose from the fuel tank.

1. Place a suitable lifting device under the fuel tank.

1. Remove the 2 front fuel tank strap bolts.
   • To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

1. NOTE: Do not bend the fuel tank straps.
   Loosen the 2 rear fuel tank strap bolts and position the 2 fuel tank straps aside.

1. Lower the fuel tank enough to move forward, clear of the fuel straps then complete the lowering procedure.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
   
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
   
3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
   
4. Drain the fuel tank.
   
5. 4WD vehicle
   1. Remove the fuel tank skid plate bolts.
      
   2. Remove the fuel tank skid plate rear left bolt.
      
   3. Remove the fuel tank skid plate rear right bolt and lower the fuel tank skid plate.
6. All vehicles
   1. Use a suitable jack to support the fuel tank.
      
   2. Remove the vent hose.
      
   3. Remove the bolt and reposition the fuel tank support strap.
      
   4. Remove the support bolts and push the fuel tank back until the lip clears the support bracket.
      
   5. Lower the fuel tank just enough to expose the fuel lines and the fuel tank transducer connector.
      
   6. Disconnect the fuel line and the vapor line.
      
   7. Disconnect the fuel tank electrical supply connector near the frame rail. Lower the fuel tank.
      
7. Clean the area around the fuel pump assembly mounting flange.
   
8. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pressure transducer.
   WARNING The fuel pump assembly must be handled carefully to avoid damage to the float arm and the filter.
   
9. Remove the fuel pump mounting bolts and remove the fuel pump assembly.

   Fuel Tank and Related Components

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

1. Remove the two pins from the fuel tank front protector.

1. Remove the three fuel tank front protector bolts and remove the fuel tank front protector.

1. Disconnect the evaporative emission hose (9E325) from the evaporative emission valve (9B593) .

1. NOTE: Label the fuel return line and fuel supply line to ease installation.
   Loosen the fuel return hose clamp and slide it away from the fuel return hose connection.

1. NOTE: Use a rag to prevent fuel from spilling while disconnecting the fuel lines.
   Disconnect the fuel return hose at the fuel tank .

1. Loosen the fuel supply hose clamp and slide it away from the fuel supply hose connection.

1. Disconnect the fuel supply hose at the fuel tank .

1. Disconnect the fuel pump and bracket electrical connector.

1. Loosen the hose clamp from the fuel tank to filler pipe hose (9047) and slide the hose clamp toward the fuel tank .

1. Separate the fuel tank to filler pipe hose from the fuel tank filler pipe (9034) .

1. Place a jack under the fuel tank to support it when the fuel tank support straps are removed.

1. Remove the two fuel tank support strap bolts and allow the fuel tank support straps to hang down.

1. Remove the spring clips from the fuel tank support strap hinges.

1. Remove the fuel tank support strap hinges and remove the fuel tank support straps.

1. NOTE: An assistant may be necessary to remove the fuel tank .
   Lower the fuel tank from the vehicle.

TO REMOVE FUEL TANK FIRST YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE FUEL SYSTEM BEEN DEPRESSURIZE. YOU CAN REMOVE FUEL PUMP RELAY LET CAR RUN UNTIL DIES LACK OF GAS. THEN CRANK ENGINE OVER FEW TIMES MAKE SURE ALL GAS OUT OF FUEL LINES. THEN REMOVE FUEL CAP THEN DRAIN FUEL TANK.YOU CAN BUY A SIPHON AT ANY AUTO PARTS STORES, DONT SIPHON GAS WITH MOUTH CAN BE VERY FATAL.ONCE FUEL OUT OF TANK. SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS, MAKE SURE VECHICLE SITTING ON LEVEL SOLID GROUND. LOOK UNDERNEATH VECHICLE REMOVE FUEL FILTER DISCONNECT FUEL PUMP ELECTRICAL WIRE CONNECTOR, THEN REMOVE EVAP CANISTER, VENT SOLENOID, AND VAPOR LINES DISCONNECT FUEL LINES, THEN REMOVE THE LOWER FILLERHOSE GOING INTO FUEL TANK. LOOK AROUND TANK YOU PROBABLY HAVE TO REMOVE HEAT SHIELD AROUND GAS TANK AND REMOVE EXHAUST PIPES IF IN THE WAY. GET A LARGE FLOOR JACK AND THE PLACE A PIECE WOOD ON FLOOR JACK SADDLE.THEN RAISE FLOOR JACK JUST ENOUGH SUPPORT FUEL TANK THEN REMOVE FUEL TANK SUPPORT STRAPS THEN SLOWLY LET DOWN THE FUEL TANK. TO FINISH DISCONNECTING FUEL LINES AND REMOVING FUEL PUMP. BE SURE AFTER YOU DEPRESSURIZE FUEL SYSTEM TURN OFF RADIO AND REMOVE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

Usually there is no access under the rear seat for safety reasons. Fuel Tank Removal & Installation 2002-2004 To Remove:

1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system.
2. Lift the vehicle.
3. Remove the frame brace from the frame.
4. Remove the fuel tank shield from the fuel tank.
5. Drain the fuel from the tank into an approved container.
6. Loosen the fuel hose clamp and disconnect the hose from the fuel tank.
7. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vent valve and fuel tank pressure sensor connectors. Evaporative emission cansister pipes removal and installation
   
   
8. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vapor and vent valve pipes from the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister.
9. Disconnect the fuel return and feed pipes from the fuel tank.
10. To avoid system contamination, cap the evaporative emission (EVAP) and fuel pipes.
11. Use a jack to support the fuel tank. Fuel tank removal and installation
    
    
12. Detach the fuel tank straps from the frame.
13. Lower the fuel tank.
14. Disconnect the fuel sender connector.
15. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.

To Install:

1. Place the fuel tank under the vehicle.
2. Connect the fuel sender connector.
3. Attach the fuel tank straps to the frame. Torque the bolts to 24 ft-lb (32 Nm).
4. Remove the caps from the evaporative emission (EVAP) and fuel pipes.
5. Connect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vapor and vent valve pipes to the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister.
6. Connect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vent valve and fuel tank pressure sensor connectors.
7. Connect the fuel hose to the fuel tank. Torque the clamp to 22 in-lb (2.5 Nm).
8. Connect the fuel return and feed pipes to the fuel tank.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Refill the fuel tank.
11. Turn on the ignition for 2 seconds, with the engine off, and then turn off the ignition. After 10 seconds, turn the ignition back on with the engine off.
12. Lift the vehicle.
13. Check for leaks in the fuel lines.
14. Install the fuel tank shield onto the fuel tank.
15. Install the frame brace onto the frame.
16. Lower the vehicle.

2005-2007 To Remove:

1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system.
2. Lift the vehicle.
3. Remove the frame brace from the frame.
4. Remove the fuel tank shield from the fuel tank.
5. Drain the fuel from the tank into an approved container. Evaporative emission cansister pipes removal and installation
   
   
6. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister fresh air, solenoid, and purge pipes from the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister.
7. Disconnect the fuel filler pipe recirculation hose from the fuel tank.
8. Loosen the fuel fill pipe clamp and disconnect the pipe from the fuel tank.
9. Disconnect the fuel feed and evaporative emission (EVAP) pipes from the fuel tank.
10. To avoid system contamination, cap the pipes.
11. Use a jack to support the fuel tank. Fuel tank removal and installation
    
    
12. Detach the fuel tank straps from the frame.
13. Lower the fuel tank.
14. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vent valve, fuel tank pressure sensor, and fuel sender connectors.
15. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.

To Install:

1. Place the fuel tank under the vehicle.
2. Connect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vent valve, fuel tank pressure sensor, and fuel sender connectors.
3. Lift the fuel tank.
4. Attach the fuel tank straps to the frame. Torque the screws to 24 ft-lb (32 Nm).
5. Remove the caps from the pipes.
6. Connect the fuel feed and evaporative emission (EVAP) pipes to the fuel tank.
7. Connect the fuel fill pipe to the fuel tank. Torque the clamp to 22 in-lb (2.5 Nm).
8. Connect the fuel filler pipe recirculation hose to the fuel tank.
9. Connect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister fresh air, solenoid, and purge pipes to the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Refill the fuel tank.
12. Turn on the ignition for 2 seconds, with the engine off, and then turn off the ignition. After 10 seconds, turn the ignition back on with the engine off.
13. Lift the vehicle.
14. Check for leaks in the fuel lines.
15. Install the fuel tank shield onto the fuel tank.
16. Install the frame brace onto the frame.
17. Lower the vehicle.

Removal
NOTE: On some vehicles, fuel gauge sending unit is not available separately. On those vehicles, to replace sending unit, replace entire fuel pump .

1. Remove fuel tank as described in this section.

Removal and Installation
NOTE: Make sure fuel tank is properly supported during removal and installation procedures.

1. Drain fuel from fuel tank .

1. Loosen fill pipe clamp.

1. Remove bolts securing shield and bracket assembly to frame (5005) and remove assembly from vehicle.

1. Remove fuel tank filler pipe from vehicle.

1. Support fuel tank .

1. Remove bolts and nuts from rear fuel tank support strap and remove rear fuel tank support strap .

1. Remove bolt and nut from front fuel tank support strap and remove front fuel tank support strap .

1. Lower fuel tank .

1. Remove fuel feed hose at sender push connector.

1. Remove fuel return hose at sender unit push connector.

1. Disconnect sender and fuel pump electrical connector.

1. Remove fuel vapor hose from fuel vapor valve .

1. Lower fuel tank from vehicle

1. Remove fuel tank to bench. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump attaching flange so that it will not enter the fuel tank during fuel pump removal.

1. Turn the fuel tank sending unit locking retainer ring (9A307) counterclockwise with the Fuel Tank Lock Ring Wrench Tool T90T-9275-A or T86T-9275-A and remove fuel tank sending unit locking retainer ring .

1. Remove the fuel pump and sender assembly.

1. Remove fuel pump mounting gasket (9417) and discard.

1. If necessary, disconnect spade connector and remove two screws and fuel gauge sending unit.

check fuel filter first. rate as fixed if this helps.
