I looked this up and the engine used in this car does not use a timing belt, it has a timing chain, they are only replaced if the engine is torn down to be rebuilt.
the engine light on some mercedes come on quite often due to a faulty ground issue either the ECM ground wires and there is about 17 of them going to the ECM itself also can be the engine sensors ground
Could be a number of causes.Some simple some not. Go to autozone and ask them to read your codes for you. They have a code reader they can plug into your car that will tell you what made the light come on.
