Reading codes check engine light 87 - 2002 Honda Accord

Is the anti-theft light lit ? If not , not anti-theft problem . Find the crank relay in the under hood fuse / relay box . Pull the relay out of it's socket an look on the bottom of the relay , you will see four sets of numbers > 30 & 87 , 85 & 86 . Where it plugs into the fuse box Jump 30 to 87 , if engine spins it's not seized up . If it shut off how did you take it to 2 places ? Did you take it to the dealer ? Did either place check DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ?

Fuel filter? Speed sensor? Is the CE light on. (Check Engine)? Bifidus AutoZone will run the codes for free most auto parts stores will check those codes for free if the yellow check engine light is on it. Let me know what you find out.

On full size Dodge trucks, you cycle the key switch to make the light flash.
On Dodge imports such as the D-50 truck, you have to use a test meter and connect it to a plug under the radio.

When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

The difference in fuel type won't turn the check engine light out. You may be on the right track with the new fuel cap, they are very common to set an EVAP code, usually P0442 for a small leak (such as a loose or leaking gas cap). The other problem they are known for is code P0128 for a faulty thermostat, opening too soon. It's still best to have it scanned at a large parts retailer, usually for free, then diagnose the actual trouble code rather than just the symptoms. There are literally 1500 trouble codes for your vehicle alone.

if you ground a and b on the connector under dash below steering wheel. then turn key to on only, the check engine light will flash the codes. read or count the first flashes, then a pause and then the second number. each set will flash 3 times. have a good day ! you may have an idle control sensor bad,is check engine light on?it's most definetly a fuel issue.if check engine light on, have it code read. sorry, you have to take it to a dealer or a reputeable place you trust. maybe someone who has worked on your car before. not just anyone. you need someone who has a code reader above 1999 year.is it very cold where you are? you may need to let it warm up more than just a few minutes.it may be only cheap fuel.87 octane fuels cheap,but misleading,it may have ethenol in the fuel. try 93 octane fuel for a 1/2 tank or add octane booster to the tank.don'nt know where you're at in world, but cold weather has effect on any engine in any vehicle.if check engine light is on, suggest you have it code read, it can cost a fortune replacing sensors,without knowing which one is bad.but your problem seems fuel related,suggest you add lucas fuel treatment to 1/2 tank of gas 93 octane fuel please.follow instructions on bottle,can get at auto zone,advance auto,nappa auto,just to name a few.but in the end if all else fails,suggest you replace idle control sensor.

87 octane ,,,you kidding ---more like 95 octane .But this has nothing to do with the vibration and check engine light,forget having the codes read get the dealer to look at it

You can't use a tool to pull codes from an '87 BMW 325(e). You have the 2.7 liter and your DME, or computer is a Motronic. If you had a 325i, then a tool could read the codes because the computer was upgraded that year to a Motronic 1.1 system with a round plug in under the screw cap on the driver's side under the hood. The only tool you can buy is the one for resetting the service interval light and resetting the oil change light. To answer your question about going about finding your driveability problem would be to get a BMW Bentley Manual. This manual shows you how to use a standard voltmeter to check everything from your computer plug in. Your computer is located above the glovebox.

I do not feel that the octane rateing has caused your problem but it is a very slight possabilty. I would recomend going to autozone or any parts store that offers code retieval and get the code before you try to go any further. Let me know the code and the explanation that the computer gives and i can give you a better idea of what to focus on.
