Above 2000 rpm., the truck runs great. but below that it surges. ihave a check engine lite which when removed stays off for about i week. i also have a battery lite on,most of the time. the battery is new(JUNE 2013) the alternator is still under warranty and seems to be working ok. should i get a vacuum valve for the engine ?
What code does the computer show when the check engine light comes on? Google that code and common causes and it will help point you in the right direction. Also may want to let it idle, and pull the connection to the idle air control valve, which is on the throttle body, and see if it changes what the engine is doing. Spray carb cleaner into the throttle assembly, small quick squirts, while it's running and it will help clean things. Also, take the pcv valve off and shake it. Hear rattling? Still good. Gunked up with oil and dirt, nothing rattles, bad valve. Cheap.

before replacing the starter get a volt meter and test the voltage coming out of the voltage regulator which the power comes from the battery to the regulator down to the starter also make sure all wires on the starter are clean and what I mean is from rust because I had an f150 that did the same thing

To do this in park or neutral is normal. To do it while driving is not.
There are so many things that could cause this but if you have no check engine light and it runs normally up until then I would suspect you have an exhaust restriction. This can be checked fairly easy on this vehicle, it has a DPFE sensor that mounts near the top back side of the motor. It will either be black or silver, will have a 3 wire connector to it and 2 hoses going down the back of the motor to the exhaust. You can disconnect one of these hoses and install a vacuum/pressure guage and measure exhaust back pressure. It should be 1 psi or less at idle and when you go to wide open throttle should not exceed 3 to 4 psi. If it does something in exhaust, most likely one of the catalytic convertors is stopped up.

no the code is most likely from a dpfe sensor for you egr system not the egr valve itself.a clogged fuel filter though might cause your low revs

It could be a spark plug, plug wire, or a coil. Sometimes thay break down intermittently. If it needs a tuneup, that would be the first thing to do.
