there are two sensors on most cars a float on the pump assembly and a preasure guage on the top of the tank one of the two is faulty and will have to be replaced or the wiring checked at least either way the tank will have to be droped to see
This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!
Unfortunately this is most likely the fuel pump module, which includes the fuel level sensor also. This should be diagnosed more thoroughly with a scanner, a good scanner will be able to check instrument cluster separately to confirm the gage is working right, and check for trouble codes that may not light any warning lamps. Hope this helps. Rate me please.P.S. Dont use that fuel station any more.
It sounds like you have a fuel level sensor problem. The fuel level sensor attaches to the fuel pump inside the gas tank. The tank will have to be removed for access. The fuel pump assembly comes out of the top of the tank, and the sensor can be then be replaced. Removing the fuel tank is the major expense. The sensor runs around $120.00.
the gas gauge is on the fuel pump assembly with in the fuel tank, you must have bumped it during reassembly. the only solution is removal. pull it out check for alignment and binding, reassemble being very careful. hope this helps.
is this expensive?
