1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Rear End problems

This is the second rear differential (used) I've had on my truck and the second time the same symptoms have arisen: vibrating/humming noise coming from the rear end. I have heard that this is a common problem with this vintage of Dodge truck. My question is, does it make sense both tangibly and economically to have the current rear end "re-built" or should I just throw another used (and possibly damaged) rear end on there. The mechanic found shavings and part of a "pin" inside the cover. Thanks for any help you can provide

Thats the way I was leaning too, but I have no clue what a rebuild might entail. Can it be done with the diff still on the truck or does that have to come off? Thank you for taking the time to answer.

Thanks again, excellent advice. I'm going to just give them the whole truck for 3 days while I'm away and see what they can do. I have no idea what to expect, $1.00 or $1,000.00.

Hello, well you can look at it in a few different ways. Like you stated you can get a rear end from a salvage yard and not know what you are getting, you can spend some big bucks to get a new rear end, or you can get it rebuilt. I feel getting it rebuilt will be the better option. If you get it rebuilt you will have new parts in the rear end and know what you have verses the cost of a new rear end. This of course depends on how much damage there is in the rearend. Economically I feel that having it rebuilt is the best option. I always get nervouse when putting in any used part because you don't know what you are getting. If you do get it rebuilt make sure they put in new bearings which any reputible shop should anyways.

It will have to be taken out especially if you're going to replace the bearings. You can leave the axle under the truck just remove the rearend, but you will have to check with who is going to be rebuilding the rear end how they want it. They might want the entire axle so they can check the lash for the imput to differential gear. The best thing to do is give them a call and ask them how they would like it. I don't know if you have ever removed a rear end before, but it's not to difficult. If not and you have any questions on how to do it feel free to ask me.

That sounds like the best thing to do. Yeah thats the downside of having any work done on your vehicle because you never know what to expect. Good luck and I hope it's not to much.

How do I adjust the timing on a 2001 Dodge Ram

There is no adjustment for the timing on a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.2 liter . and the most likely cause on th eother problem is the abs speed sensor on the rear differential it is bolted to the top of the differential housing with a 10mm bolt remove it slowly in a twisting motion and put new differential grease on the o-ring slide it in and bolt it down and remeber to clear all codes or the sensor will run off of old paremeters

Where is the vehicle speed sencor on a dodge ram 1500 V8 cyl. 1998 . the book says its on the tranny or rearend or could be on the steering colume. can't find it.

If its a 4x4 its in the transfer case near the back on the housing the drive shaft goes into. The one in the rear end is located dead center on top of the differential.

Were do you refill rear end differential on 98 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4

On the rear differential there will either be a metal plug or a rubber plug. The metal plug can be removed with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet. the rubber plug can be removed with a small screwdriver. Faceing the axle from the rear will see the plug to the right side on the cover plate. Remember to also check the front differential as well. Hope this will help you.

Rear end noise on 2002 Dodge ram 1500

If you have a positraction differential, you need posi additive along with the new lube. After it's in, take it to a parking lot and make tight left turns then tight right turns to get the lube between the posi plates. That usually frees it up unless there is an actual mechanical problem in the diff.
good luck!
