The Haynes manual says the following:-
The central contol unit (CCU) is located in the back of the fusebox below the driver's side fascia. If a fault develops you have to use a LR delaer to use the diagnostics. The unit controls the anti-theft, windscreen wipers, courtesy lamp delay, door opening warning lamp, key-in alarm, rear foglights, light-on alarm, seat belt warning, handbrake warning, rear screen wiper, tailaget window and many others.
Section 12.20 has a whole section on the alarm. The key fob alarm handset contains a transponder which talks to a reader in the ignition switch. So the immobiliser will cut in if the ignition key and the key fob are not on the same key ring.
