The first thing i would check is the fuel pressure. the fuel pump may be running, but that doesn't mean that it is putting out the right amount of fuel

SOURCE: adjust timing on 1998 GMC K2500 pick up 5.7 liter

It has to be done with a scanner. You can adjust this distributor, but there are no timing marks to watch as you move it. There is a timing mark on the balancer and on the timing cover for referencing Top Dead Center #1 cylinder only, but it is only used for dropping the distributor in to get the engine up and running. A scanner is needed to properly adjust the timing. Connect the scanner and look for a data parameter labeled ‘cam offset’ or possibly ‘cam ******.’ It will be listed in degrees. Start the engine, and bring it up to 1500 rpm. Note the reading. If the timing specification is not within plus or minus two degrees of zero, you need to move the distributor. You can move the distributor with the engine running but the timing will not change. After you move the distributor, the ignition has to be cycled off to let the computer learn the new timing spec. Restart the engine, bring it up to 1500 rpm and see what the new spec is. You must repeat this procedure until you get the timing into the specification as mentioned above. Once you have it set to spec, the code should clear.

Hey there boatright33,

A few things things immediately come to mind.

There may be a problem with the engine controller. You could check the ODBII onboard diagnostics. Auto part stores will usually do this for you at no cost.

When you pulled the ones that were/went bad, how did the filters look? Could there be particulate matter still in the tank causing them to fail.

I always put this one off until last. Check the injectors. Are they gummed up?

Let me know what you find out
Mike

SOURCE: 1987 GMC sierra , no fuel pump power.

The inline fuel pump fuse on the passenger side firewall is good? Are you jumping it with 12 volts at the test lead or the fuse?

My 1992 gmc has no spark and the fuel injectors dont work. why?

Check to see if when you removed the main plug and reinstalled it none of the metal fingers were bent in the computer. It has happened in the process also add some dielectric grease to keep them from grounding out.

Why wont my 1998 gmc 3500 sierra turn over

Check for fuel by pouring small amount of clean gas down throttle body and crank engine over. if it starts and runs just for a few seconds you have a fuel delivery problem. If it still does not run after several attempts check for spark at spark plugs. that should get diagnosis started

Fuel pump

Testing of the fuel and ignition systems is in order. Intermittent problems need testing when the problem is present, otherwise it won't help find the problem.
I would start by checking for spark on a spark plug wire (or two or three plug wires, in case it may be a bad coil), during those times when it won't start. You need to see a blue, snapping spark to verify ignition system is working.
To check the fuel system, have the fuel pressure checked, and the injector circuit checked. Good that you hear the pump, but you don't know if fuel pressure is correct, or if fuel is getting into the cylinders. One short test is to spray starting fluid or carb cleaner into the intake while engine is cranking. If engine fires up for a few seconds, you know it is a gas related problem.
If ignition system is the intermittent problem, could be failing coil or coils, ignition module, crank position sensor, even the computer, or a wiring problem like a bad connection. Testing of each component will be required, or you could start throwing new parts at it, like many people do, until you find the bad part. Find a reputable mechanic-there still are a few, lol.

I have a 1999 gmc sierra with (as of 30 days ago cat. converter, fuel pump and filter, cap and rotor) changed in garage. regular oil changes, tune ups as of 8 mths. it has lots of cranking power, but...

If i understand you right the truck has been sitting for two years. If it has been sitting that long without running or moving the gas has turned to varnish...I suggest that you drain and refill the fuel tank, and replace the fuel filter located on/in the frame rail on drivers side.

1998 gmc 2500 sle 5.7 wont stay running

Theres only one fuel pump relay, unless you have dual tanks. Be sure you have 55-60 psi fuel pressure. I "think" the oil pressure switch supplies power to the fuel pump after the engine is running.

Yes I have a 1998 GMC Sierra K1500 5.7 4x4 It

I don't really think it matters what state you live in they both have the same kind of weather, i know because i have lived in both, your problem is most likely fuel related, chanses are its either a fuel filter or fuel pump problem, either filter is pluging up or the pump is weak. Best thing to do is chg. the filter and do a pressure test on the pump
