The Cam Sensor senses a slot on the camshaft gear (part of the timing gear set) It is located at the front of the engine behind the engine mount plate near the top of the timing cover. Be aware both the crank and cam sensors need to be properly adjusted for clearance or they won't send a good signal. The factory procedure is to install a stick-on disc spacer. It looks like a felt pad, it spaces it properly then when it is started it gets rubbed off the sensor and falls into the crankcase. I have found a few crankshaft sensor rings (which are part of the flywheel) that had been tweeked from transmission or engine replacement.

Cranks but won't start

Depending on the year make and model, a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) would help. Is the check engine light on when it does run? Testing needs to be done. Check for spark at the plug, make sure fuel pressure is what it should be and that the fuel injectors are working. If all that is good, I would check compression and timing.

I have a 2001 montero sport es 3.0. It wouldn't start one morning. This happened b4 and I went back next day, unplugged the maf sensor and it started, rough, but ran.. I plugged in maf and it ran

Did that work this time? Did you get a "check engine" light? Get the code read?

Unfortunately, "won't start" can be caused by so many different things we really can't begin to help you with what you've said.

With all of the low voltage problems going on here I would check the body computer. That is the only thing I can think of that would cause all of this. Some others may have suggestions on this.

I would try your pickup coil in your distributor. I would also be checking the o2 sensors. both of these things can cause problems like this and would not set off the check engine light.
