Transmission fluid has begun dripping off the bell housing. The starter motor mating surface is a wet area. The fluild flows down the bell housing edge from there and drips off. No wetness above the starter. This is a slow dripping leak that began suddening. Seems to be independent of the engine running or not. Engine is a 5.7L with automatic, 2001 Express Van.
If transmission fluid is dripping off the bellhousing your torque converter seal is leaking or your transmission pump seal is leaking. Chances are the torque converter seal is leaking since the torque converter is spinning on it any time the engine is turning, the pump seal dosen't move it just keeps fluid inside the transmission. Even though it leaks with or without the engine running I'm willing to bet if you got underneath it with the engine running you will see it leaks more with the engine running. Now if either seal is leaking it will require the engine to be removed from the transmission to get to the seal. Sorry but this isn't going to be a cheap quick fix.
Sorry about the split answer (my computer times me out after so long). Anyway, the fix will not be cheap or quick. The engine will have to be seperated from the transmission. I don't know how mechanically inclined you are or what kind of tools/equipment you have but I would recommened taking it to shop and at least getting an estimate on the repair cost. I wouldn't take it to a dealership because I feel their labor rate is to high. Any halfway decent repair shop should be able to make this repair without any problem. I'm sure this isn't the answer you were hoping for but there's not much else you can do. Also I wouldn't recommend using any "transmission stop leak chemicals". These are really only effective on gaskets, not seals. And they ususally create problems.

Thanks Rory for help. I thought it would be something like that. Interesting though, after losing about a pint of fluid it either quits leaking or is dramatically reduced
can not see were it is coming from
