Fuel gauge my 1997 GMC Sierra gas gauge reads full when it is running. then when i shut the truck off then i guess it wants to read it right and im not really sure if i should go off that or not. when i got the truck i put $55 in it and at the time the gauge showed under a half and i drove a 111 miles and not when i shut the truck off it shows that i have a little under a half a tank and a little under 1/4 so should i go with shutting the truck off to see how much gas i have left?

I don't think you could trust that either. Sounds like the sending unit in the tank is messed up, so it may never read correctly. By now, you must know the approximate miles per gallon it gets, so until you get the gauge fixed, you should go by the number of miles you go to know when it needs gassing up. Just as a ballpark figure, a '97 Sierra, city driving, maybe 15-17 mpg? I really don't know, you could google it I'm sure.

SOURCE: fuel gauge stuck on half full

I can tell you almost for certain your fuel level sending unit is bad, I have been able to fix them though. It requires removing the gas tank and then the fuel pump. You can if your inclined, bend the brushes on the small circuit board over more so they will make better contact on to it. Other wise its a new fuel pump assembly, check all plugs and wiring by unpluging and repluging them to insure no bad connect. It is possible it could be the guage itself, but in thirty years of fixing cars never had a bad guage

SOURCE: The fuel gauge doesn't read right, makin' low fuel light flash

if the fuel pump is all in-tank; the sending unit built in to the fuel pump is most likely malfunctioning; if so, this will require removal and replacement of the entire fuel pump, sometimes expensive, others not so much

SOURCE: 93 gmc sierra 5.7 liter engine, injection carb,

you say you replaced the fuse, but does the fuse have power? the gray wire at pump should have power when cranking, or for 2 seconds when turning key on. At fuel pump relay, put power onto gray wire, the pump should run if the wiring is good. if it doenst run then ck for power at fuse while power is on gray wire.

SOURCE: GMC envoy after I filled gas tank the low fuel

You will need to replace the fuel level sensor which is in the fuel tank. They have a lot of problems because the metal fingers on the sensor wear off and gives you the incorrect readings. This will also cause the check engine light to come on.You will probably have a level sensor code. This will be a lot easier if the fuel level is down to about a quarter tank or less. Also you should be able to get just the level sensor and not have to get the complete fuel pump module.Good luck.

Truck starts, but then stalls, will not restart just keeps cranking, replaced fuel pump didn't fix . 1997 gmc sierra, 305 engine, 4 wheel.

have you tried to start it with your foot on the gas about 30 %. My question is are you sure its not just a issue with maintaining an idle. This would indicate a bad idle air control valve. Unless you have some readings to go on like fuel pressure and data for the maf and various sensors all we can do is guess also. It may be you have a failed computer but without any testing or data its anyones guess.

Fuel gauge is not reading

to the right , i am assuming to the "full tank" reading. am i right?

if i am right, the wire from the gas tank is sending a full tank signal what ever the content of the tank.

meaning the wire is shorted to ground.
or the sending unit is faulty. there is a short to ground reading between the sending unit.

you can test which one is faulty. remove the wire from the sending unit. observe the gauge. if the gauge would go to " empty" then the culprit is the sending unit. if it stays on " full tank", then the wire is faulty.

WARNING: GASOLINE IS EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. BE VERY CAREFUL IN HANDLING NEAR THEM.
