Have you had any codes pulled?
A cold start issue may be related to a coolant sensor problem. When the engine is cold the engine control module will enrich the fuel mixture for start based on the reading it receives from the coolant sensor.
You can have it checked when cold and the temperature reading should match the out door temp. A scan tool will be required. Or replace the sensor, I believe the cost is less than $20.
Good luck, let me know.
Regards.

CAPACITIES
Automatic transmission, 42LE Initial Fill..........4.6 quarts [1]

automatic transmission, Total Fill
4 speed 42LE..........9.3 quarts
Differential, Front..........1.5 pints [2]

1. With ENG at operating temperature, shift through all gears. Check fluid level in PARK and add fluid as needed.

2. 42LE transaxles built after 7-26-99 fill to 3/8" (9mm) below fill hole.

Hope This Helps.

********Make sure that you use the recommended type flluid ATF+4, as there are several types available. Using the wrong type of fluid will damage your transmission********

Where do you check the transmission fluid?

PERFORM AN ELIMINATION OF ENGINE FLIUD CONTAINERS TO ACQUIRE THE TRANSMISION CHAMBER

The vehicle should only have an engine oil compartment, radiation compartment for antifreeze/ water, power steering fliuds, a water wiper blade spray dispenser compartment, and finally the transmittion fliud container area all situted within the engine entrapment area. Usually, opening the engine for the first time would require observing the fliud compartments that are identifyable from the remaining engine chambers. Observing closely on the fliud container should have written descriptions of what is expected within compartment. For example, the water fliud containers for wiper blades would usually have written lables as wiper blade fliud container, radiantion container would usually have the antifreeze demarkation logos visibly observable when engine is opened. Rely by elimination methods to ascertain the transmission fliud compartment. For example, once antifreze container, wiper water container, engine oild container, power steering fliud containers have been identified, the most like only remaining in the engine would be the transmition fliud compartment. Alternately, every fliud container within the vehicle engine is situated at separate areas. For example, the only fliud container closest to the transmittion chamber is the engine oil compartment. The vehicles usually require more engine oil than transmission fliud. Between both fliud containers, the smallest chamber for fliud oil is usually for transmission perposes in the absence of hydraulic fliud compartments with newer vehicles.

1999 Olds Alero. Low coolant light comes on and stays on even though its full. Starts running hot to the 3/4 mark. When the heater is turned on it cools off. Could this be the thermostat or the water pump.

TAKE RADIATOR CAP OFF WITH ENGINE COLD AND CHECK WATER ..MAKE SURE RADIATOR NOT BLOCKED,,PLASTIC BAG ETC. THIS SOUNDS LIKE LOW WATER OR RADIATOR ..STOPPED UP INSIDE ..IF YOU HAVE GOOD HEAT IT'S FULL OF WATER. REPLACE T STAT B4 RADIATOR..IT'S CHEAPER. ALSO CHECK FOR RADIATOR COOLING FAN OPPERATION..I,M RULING OUT THE WATER PUMP.

Your Alero does not have a transmission dip stick. You do not need to check it unless it starts leaking.

Sounds like a hamster in a wheel

After about 3 - 4 years, a powersteering pump accumulates a lot of metal specs, once they start building up, your pump starts choking, and wont be able to let the fluid flow through and basically fry itself. My advice, have a shop, drain and flush your power steering pump / fluid. You can even do it yourself, but it requires 2 people; Lift front end up, on jacks followed by stands, unhook the powersteering pump line, turn car on, and have your friend, mom, father w.e turn the wheel from left to right, let the old fluid drain out, one old fluid is out, pour NEW powersteering fluid into the pump, you will need to let it flow through, so it flushes itself out. Remember to put a large pan underneath where the pump is so you dont get fluid everywhere, be prepared to buy at least 3 - 4 bottles of fluid. Let 2 bottles run through, then put the pump line back on and fill 'er up.

Then your done, drive and see.
