How do i remove my steering wheel on my '92 4Runner? Ultimately, i'm trying to remove and replace the lighting combo switch, but i can't get the steering wheel off to get to get to it. I've removed the horn, and the main center nut, but I can't seem to get it off from there. What am I missing?

It truly isn’t that hard! 4 screws. More than likely do not have a wheel puller. Instead of dragging this out if you have any AutoZone next to you they loaned tools for free tell them what you’re doing and that you need a wheel puller they will break down much faster than I can give it to you on this good luck my friend

SOURCE: Would appreciate help for a Toyota Corolla 2007 non-working horn.

If the horn works with direct connection, and fuse, relay, and circuit breaker are all good, it's the switch in the steering wheel. If it is anything like the chrysler auto's, the switch and the air bag module is all one unit, can't replace just the switch, the whole thing, and it's about $700 to $800 for those units, at least it is here, and can only get them at a dealer.

once the lug nuts are off the wheel should come off, if not bang on the tire with a heavy hammer it is stuck on the hub (RUST).

the whole inside parts?
are you removing the steering wheel ?

first hard part is air bags, very dangerous.
and the coil spring, in wheel hub. easy to damage that.
first off major work , you need the FSM. why not get it and read it.

if no bags , good. easier.
the other issue is the
there are 3 critical steps.
1: Bags.
2: ignition switch assy, anthieft screws.
3: collapsible shaft, possible damage.
4: the steering wheel puller and steps. the FSM covers each separately.

wheel. quote
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the air bag system.
  2. Set the front tires in a straight-ahead position.

  1. Remove the air bag module retaining nuts from behind the steering wheel.
  2. Remove the air bag module. Defeated first !!!!
  3. If equipped, remove the cruise control switch.
  4. Disconnect the horn wiring.
  5. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut.
  6. Scribe a line mark on the steering wheel and steering shaft if there is not one already.
  7. Remove the steering wheel using a suitable puller.
  8. the palm smacking trick can get the wheel off if lucky.
To install:
  1. To install, align the scribe marks on the steering shaft with the steering wheel.
  2. Ensure the wheel compresses the 2 locktabs on the clockspring.
  3. Pull the air bag and if equipped, cruise control wires through the larger hole and horn wire through the smaller hole. Ensure they are not pinched.
  4. Install the steering wheel nut and tighten it to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm) while forcing the steering wheel down the shaft with the nut.
  5. Connect the wire feed to the horn buttons.
  6. Connect the feed wires and tighten the air bag retaining nuts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Ensure the air bag is completely seated. The latching clip arms must be visible on top of the connector housing on the module.
  7. Enable the air bag system and connect the battery cable.
  8. From the right side of the vehicle (in case of accidental deployment), turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  9. Check for proper air bag warning light operation.
end quote, get the FSM. there are many more pages, for
the COMBO section, and shaft.

Remove steering wheel

take the horn pad off (usually 3 phillips head screws behind it) undo big bolt inside most of the way but not all of the way, then whack around the wheel with the palm of your hands til its loose, then take the rest of the bolt off, wheel comes off. the combo switch usually just unscrews from there.
hope that helps =)

The combo switch which you are talking about is broken and needs to be replaced. Your local parts store should have one in stock or can order one for you. You have to remove the plastic shrouding around the steering column to gain access to the torx type screws that hold the switch in place. The new switch will be the whole unit, ie; the handle and such. Good luck.

96 Audi A4 2.8L how to replace combo head light switch on steering column?

For this repair you will need a 6mm Allen key or socket, long no. 1 phillips screwdriver, 24mm socket with extension and ratchet handle and a T20 Torx driver or socket.

Park the vehicle and make sure the front wheels are straight and the steering wheel centred. Remove the negative battery terminal (make sure you have the radio code first!). Loosen the two 6mm Allen bolts on the back of the steering wheel and CAREFULLY remove the airbag by pulling straight out on the orange connector on the back of the airbag. Always store the airbag, when removed from the vehicle, with the side facing the driver in the UP position, preferably out of the vehicle.

Loosen and remove the 24mm nut in the centre of the steering wheel. Make note of the position of the wheel relative to the steering shaft with a marker or scribe. Do not remove the steering wheel from the shaft as yet. Next remove the two phillips screws from the recess holes in the bottom steering column cover. Loosen the locking handle under the steering column to allow it to drop down and with the handle still loose, remove the Torx bolt from the centre of the lower cover. Next, remove the upper steering column cover and disconnect the two wiring connectors that come from the back of the steering wheel. With those two wires disconnected, remove the steering wheel by pulling it straight off towards you. Place the steering wheel on a bench or other flat surface so the wiring and connectors are not damaged.

Remove the three small phillips head screws from the lower steering column cover that were behind the steering wheel and carefully pull the cover free around the ignition tumbler. You now have access to the turn signal, headlamp and wiper switches. Be careful when removing electrical connectors and be sure to note the position of all screws and other fasteners.

Reinstall in the reverse order and follow procedure for entering radio code and resetting auto down feature on LH and RH front windows.

Using left turn signal cause headlights to turn off intermidantly

Center the steering wheel, and remove the key. Disconnect the battery. Remove the upper & lower shrouds on the steering column. You now need to pull the air bag /horn pad assembly, use torx drivers to remove it. After the airbag/horn pad is disconnected, unplug the wires. Set it off to the side. Remove the large nut that holds on the steering wheel, and remove the steering wheel. Remove the 4 screws on the black circular device with yellow tape on it. Do NOT turn this circular device left or right, you will damage it. You may or may not have to unplug this device. The combo switch will now be visible. Remove the screws, and extract the switch.
