I own a 1987 Nissan 300Zx with a 5 speed. I was on a trip and the transmission would not go into reverse. Then later on while driving home the trans stuck in 5th gear and would not dis-engage. The cluth slave cylinder is full of fluid.
I recently had a new cluth installed and the slave cylinder was replaced too. The slave cylinder came from AutoZone...a generic replacement, but it worked fine for a couple of weeks. What would cause the reverse to go out followed by sticking in 5th? Would a generic slave cylinder cause the problem? A friend suggested the clutch needed to be blead to get air bubbles out. Not sure if air bubbles would cause such a problem. Thanks.

1990 Nissan 300zx 2 seater
VG30DE with an automatic tranny (with overdrive)
My car is stuck in 3rd gear - it will go into park neutral or reverse but when in any "forward moving" gear (i.e. drive) it stays in 3rd. It doesnt try to shift and theres no noticeable noise/grinding... It is very hard to take off from stop signs but at 80-85 mph the car has immense torque to the ground and really high rpms.
It sounds to me like the keys from another post i saw on this site, any suggestions/ideas?
Is there any pedal pressure when you step on the clutch? I had a similiar problem with my 91 300zx tt....it was stuck in third gear, no pedal pressure on the clutch whatsoever....i had cracked the pivot ball and the clutch slave 'popped out'. i had to pull the trans to fx the problem because i could not reattach the clutch fork onto the release bearing with the trans in the vehicle....you need to bleed the system...gravity bleed the slave until there are no air bubbles. make sure you top off the clutch master cylinder in the process.....then bleed the clutch operating cylinder.....it is in the passenger front hood near the power steering resivoir....top off the clutch master cylinder again. i hope this helps.
