I have a 2003 Olds Alero. My fuel pump gave out some time ago. I know that it is in the gas tank, and that I have to drop that to get to it. what i want to know, is there any way that I can fix my existing fuel pump rather than buy a replacement for it?
there must be something I can do.
Also, what are the tests I need to perform to determine that it is the pump and not some other part that is messing up?
thanks,

Hi. here are a few steps that will help you troubleshoot this device.
Step1 Go to the back of your carand take off the fuel filler cap. Ask an assistant to turn the ignitionon but do not start the engine. Listen closely for a brief, vibratorysound coming from the tank. If you cannot hear the sound, go to thenext step.
Step2Check the fuel pump circuit fuse. It should be in the fuse panel underthe dashboard or in the engine compartment Verify that it is in goodcondition and the contacts are free from corrosion. If necessary, replace it and test the pump again.
Step3Inspect fuel lines, hoses and connectors. Make sure hoses are not torn, bent or obstructed. Verify there are no gas leaks.
Step4Locate the fuel pump relay. You might find it in the enginecompartment, at the driver or passenger side and close to thewindshield or at the front of the engine as part of a cluster ofrelays. Another common place is under the dashboard.
Step5Remove the fuel pump relay. Ask an assistant to turn the ignition onbut do not start the engine. Using a test light, check for incomingvoltage at the relay connector. If there is no voltage, check for anopen or short at the wire between the relay and the fuse panel.
Step6Jump the relay connector to apply battery voltage to the fuel pump. After the jumper wire is connected, ask an assistant to turn on theignition while you listen for fuel pump operation as described in step1. If the fuel pump works now, replace the relay and test again.Another alternative is to test the fuel pump relay for properoperation.
Step7Locate the fuel pump connector at the back of the car and check forincoming voltage with a test light. While you check for voltage, ask anassistant to turn on the ignition but do not start the engine. If thereis no voltage, check for an open or short at the wire between the relayand the fuel pump.
Step8 Check the power and ground connections at the pump and make sure they are good and free of corrosion.
Step9Test the fuel pump. Apply direct voltage to the fuel pump. If youcannot easily remove the fuel pump through the trunk of your vehicle, you might want to take a fully charge car battery to the back of thecar. Raise the vehicle and secure it firmly on jack stands. Unplug thefuel connector and use a couple of jumper wires to connect the batteryto the fuel pump. If the pump does not work, replace it.
Please rate and god bless:)
Use the service manual for your particular
vehicle if you have difficulty locating components or need to identify
wiring designations for testing. You can buy a vehicle service manual
at most auto parts stores or consult one for free at most public
libraries. Some vehicle models provide a special test connector to verify fuel pump operation. Consult your vehicle service manual.
Even
while operating, physical wear may cause a fuel pump to loose pressure.
Have it tested by a professional mechanic if you suspect this might be
the case.Make
sure you are in a well ventilated area and away from appliances with
open flames like dryers or water heaters whenever you are working with
the car’s fuel system.Do not allow smoking near your vehicle while working in your car’s fuel system.

Hello, no if your fuel pump has gone bad theres no fixing it other then replacing it and as far as the test what is the symptoms that cause you to beleave that its the pump ?
WOW NICE JOB ON TROUBLE SHOOTING FROM WHAT YOU'VE SAID YOUR CORRECT TO ASSUME ITS THE FUEL PUMP THEN AND YES IT'S GOT TO BE REPLACED NO REPAIRING THEM I MAKE THEM FOR A JOB AND THERES NOT MUCH TO THEM BUT SADLY DUE TO THE SAFTY RESTRAINTS YOUR NOT ABLE TO REPAIR ONE JUST REPLACE IT. AND ON A 2003 I THINK THAY USED THE LOCK RING FOR THE PUMP NOT THE JAR RING THAT JUST TWIST OFF IF YOU NEED HELP REPLACING IT LET ME KNOW

Usually answered in minutes!
the symptoms are that it died on the hwy with brand new battery. turns over but will not ignite. and will not run. had 3/4 tank of gas.
cannot hear anything from the fuel pump with the hum/buzz test.
no fuel spray from the engine bleeder valve.
the filter is still fairly new and quite clean.
all this together points me toward the fuel pump.
