Clutch Whine on Toyota 4WD Pickup

When I depress and release the clutch on my '81 Toyota 4WD P/u (only 102K miles and in great shape), I get a whining sound. Doesn't happen all the time, just started a couple days ago, not getting any worse. Short sharp whine, sometimes a bit longer. Only when changing gears. Also when backing up. All seems to happen around the clutch depression and keeping the clutch actively engaged (i.e. right on the edge of engaging). Have topped off clutch, brake, transmission fluids. Any ideas?

There is a bearing that presses on the center of the clutch release arms when you put your foot down, it's called the clutch release bearing. It sounds like yours is starting to go bad. There is also a bushing or bearing in the back of the crankshaft that can cause this noise. the the input shaft of the transmission is stabilized in this. These two items are almost always replaced when a clutch job is performed. Unfortunately that is the only way to get at these two bearings. You may be able to drive the vehicle for quite a few more miles. but this is a sign of things to come.

Bad bearings. Perhaps a throw out bearing. The pressure on it varies depending on whether your pushing on the pedal or not, and how much. If the noise occured only when the truck is moving, then I would say it is the input bearing. Changed alot of those years ago.

What could be the reason for a wine in the engine of my discovery 4

Julia, Is it a manual version?
If so, does the whine become noticeable when the clutch is depressed? If so, it could be a thrust bearing - on the clutch. It could also be a spigot bearing.

You may not understand what these are - but they're more a 'nuisance' than a problem. If you had engine problems there would be knocks and rumbles.

It's very hard for anybody on Fixya to diagnose a problem without seeing the vehicle and listening. However, a 'whine' sounds like a bearing - clutch or gearbox. It may be nothing to worry about.

To put your mind at rest ask a mobile mechanic to have a look - or go to a workshop

2006 Mitz. Lancer whining noise from clutch/trans. area.

Hi! Most likely you have a worn throw-out bearing which applies pressure on the clutch plate to engage and disengage the transmission. If that is the case, the tranny would have to be removed to replace it along with a new clutch assembly! Good luck!

I replace the transmission fluid in my 96 b2300 5 spd a couple months ago. We had our first ice storm last week and I noticed a sort of whine coming from the transmission. Not typical transmission whine...

this sounds like you have a deffective clucth release bearing. in order to change it, the transmission will have to be remove. this may have been the result of moisture in the bearing cause by the snow. to avoid such situation again it is advisable that you park your vehicle in a covered and enclosed garage

1991 Toyota pickup 4WD clutch slipping

There is an adjustment for the clutch pedal under the dash where the push rod goes thru the firewall. There is only aprx. 1/2" of adjustment so be careful when making an adjustment, if your clutch is slipping then you need to shorten the throw of the push rod.

Whining

hi these boxes tended to be a bit noisey anyway but a simple test for the release bearing and first motion shaft is easy first make sure g/box oil level is ok
start engine ,take your foot off the clutch peddle compleatly you have a whine, put your foot on the peddleVERYlightlynoise should change ,if the noise is more of a rattle than a whine it is coming from the clutch release bearing if it a definate whine it is either the spigot bearing in the flywheel or the first motion shaft
