1993 VW Cabriolet Fuel pump or Injector problem?

My 1993 VW cabriolet has problems when I get down to about half a tank of gas.  It will start to sputter and die as though i was running out of gas.  I also have a small bit of trouble starting the car but nothing too noticeable,  just crank it a couple of times.  Would this be indicative of a fuel pump problem or fuel injection?

Hi. This is more of a fuel filter issue than a pump issue although, a bad fuel filter will eventually destroy a fuel pump. When the filter is restricted or clogged, this will tend to work the pump harder than normal. this will over heat the pump, therefore, shortening its life span. I recommend replacing the fuel pump and filter and, adding a fuel additive like techtron fuel injector cleaner/water remover as well.

Please rate and have a great day:)

The car has 2 fuel pumps. Internal thats inside the tank that pressures fuel to the other outside the tank to flow 15psi to the motor. If the internal goes out it will still run but only on 1/2 tank to more to full tank of gas. bc the external can still run harder to pull fuel out of the tank by its self. so u prob need a internal fuel pump. go on ebay. like 80.00 insteed of 316.99 at parts stores.

VW Cabriolet RPM decreases

Hi, it sounds like you have dirt, water ,gunk & grime in your inline factory fuel filter ,.Its located between the tank & the inlet manifold,.
once you located, have it changed it, or have it changed, (its a steel canister with flow arrow) ,check for lacquer peel, which is a sealant they sometimes use in fuel tanks, check contents of old canister by pouring remainder into a container and check for this, it will be flacky particals, if severe, have tank tanken out of car & cleaned, this is due to not having the tank full most the time, Also, check your air cleaner , it will help with the cars performance. hope this helps, Kipper 25257603-fhf2ppg4i12i45qd5vaymkeg-2-0.jpgmake sure arrow on filter face front of car....

VW Cabriolet RPM decreases

Hello,
to me its sounds as though you have dirt ,gunk & grime ,water, in the main inline factory fuel filter, ,it will be a steel canister type, between the feul tank and the intake manifold, change filter,( u may need a mechanic, or someone handy with a spanner, once off, tip contents into and look for laquer peel, some tanks are seal with this, and it will some times peel ( especially if tank not kept full). if that is the case, have your tank taken out & cleaned, also, check airfilter, car will run better n cheaper to run, Hope this Helps. 89 VW CABRIOLET, IT WAS RUNNING, SHOT DOWN AND WON'T START AGAIN. NEXT DAY IT STARTED, AND DID THE SAME THING. IT WILL NOT START AFTER THAT

check your fuel pump or fuel pump relay. When you try to start the car you should hear the fuel pump hum from the rear of the car.

1989 vw cabriolet fuel pump test is there a way

yes. Depending on where your fuel filter is located, you can disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter and then try to crank the car over. If it spits fuel out of the disconnected line your pump is working, if not then it's bad. Another way to tell, but not always is when you car is started you hear a high pitched whining sound from the tanks. This is usually (again, not always) an indication of a fuel pump about to fail.

1988 vw Jetta power to fuel injector

If the fuel pump has power it may be a bad ground clean the plugs contact with electric contact cleaner it comes in a spray can. spray the inside of the plug and plug it on several times to rub off any corrosion on the plug and its contacts. By the way if the pump has power to it the relay is working when you turn the key one you can hear the fuel pump relay click.

1990 VW Cabriolet Gas Smell and humming from gas cap...The smell and sound happens more frequently on warm/hot days. Gas cap seal has been replaced, but still having problems.

The humming noise is coming from the fuel pump.  Its possible its getting ready to fail.  These start making noise when they are going bad.  The smell can be coming from bad gas cap not sealing up fuel tank properly and or a fuel pump/sending unit seal.  You can pull the back seat bottom out easy enough by removing 2 5mm alan screws that secure it to the floor.  Remove the seat bottom buy pulling out and remove black cover under seat bottom that has 3 philips screws.  you may smell fuel more promanently here.
