F150 transmission neutralizes when shifts to overdrive

Ford F150 automatic transmission does not work properly when the transmission shifts into overdrive. The transmission acts as if it is in neutral when the transmission shifts into overdrive. When OD is turned off, the problem does not occur. The transmission type is 4R70W.

my transmission "shifts" into neutral when it attempts to go into overdrive, turning off the od allows the trans to operate normally but without the overdrive gear. i have been told it could be a broken overdrive solenoid clip

I have a 2004 F150 FX4 and when OD is on it slams into 2nd gear when slowing and then accelerating (20 to 30 mph). When I am on the freeway and it shifts into OD it goes into neutral and slams in and out of gear.

I have that exact same truck and transmission and My Transmission did the exact same thing about a year ago and there was some kind of snap ring inside the transmission that broke. I originally thought it had to be an electirical problem because the truck shifted fine until OD or if i turned OD off. The 4r70w is a light transmission and i would suggest you have a shift kit put in and they make a heavier kit to beef it up.. Sorry its probably not the new you were looking for.

2006 Ford F150 Automatic not shifting into 3rd gear

-Sounds like shifting solenoid is not working properly. (It's inside the transmission valve body)

Good luck

1990 f150 automatic with overdrive shifts only at high rpms

Kinda sounds like it works when fluid is thick and not after it warms up. If it has been awhile since trans fluid and filter were changed it is the most simple thing to change. The torque converter is a big pump, it may be going and not providing enough pressure. This could be checked on most transmissions by a shop expert. Sometimes pressure can be adjusted externally.

My ford F150 won't shift from 2nd to 3rd. Does anyone know what could be the issue?

Usually the transmission needs to be rebuilt in that situation. It's a very common problem if that's the famous automatic overdrive transmsission. AOD I have had three trucks that have done that. It usually starts by shuttering when it shifts and than finally goes out. Sometimes the Lucas transmission treatment gives you a little more time, but it sounds too late for yours. From what I understand (mechanic told me) that when the overdrive goes out, it takes third gear with it. If you drive in hilly areas, that overdrive is shifting in and out all the time as you go up and down hills and wears it out. My Dad had that hapen on his F150 and he replaced his transmission with a junk yard transmission that turned out to have the same problem. I had that transmission replaced with a Jasper rebuilt and it worked great. I think it was $1300 for the rebuilt trans with the old one core trade in. I think when 3rd gear goes out, you can only go about 45mph without over reving the engine. I saw that same problem with a Ford Crown vic with that same transmission and 302 engine that my neighbor had.
Did your third gear just go out all of a sudden or were you getting like a shuttering or kind of a grinding sound when it shifted?

Doesn't want to shift properly when in Over Drive

its most likely an E4OD,its probably a bad shift solenoid inside the transmission...but you have to take the pan off and i cant quit remember but may also have to pull off the valve body,if that has to be done then there is 8 or 9 ball bearings in there that will fall out.I would call a transmission shop and ask if it has to come out.

Transmission neutralizes when taking off in drive.

That's probably why it's lurching. It's try to shift down. The valve body is a reasonable suspect. Was the balve body yorgued? Are the ck balls in the proper circuits? If the valve body has any loose bolts, the gaskets need to be replaced again. Good luc

1990 f150 transmission up shift to early

Sounds like the passing gear cable is out of adjustment. Get a shop manual and see what the specs are on how to adjust it properly. It is a pretty simple fix.
