You should get the check engine light read to see what the code(s) is. This will help with diagnosing what is going on with your taurus.
It may just need a simply tune-up since it has over 100k. The coil pack may need to be replaced, could be a bad cam position sensor, a vacuum leak...
Most parts stores, like Advance Auto Parts, will check the code for free

when did tune up your engine? call ford auto parts department and ask them how many miles can you go between tune ups. spark plug wires, the coil and spark plugs wear out.

3. Press the TUNE/SEL knob to select set clock

most likely tune up time. spark plugs usually act up around 60k

you just need a stock alternator. The parts store will make you take yours off and replace it with an exact duplicate and they will take your old one as a core.

Sounds like the transmission is slipping; take it to a shop.

Are you using the correct grade of fuel.
Manufacturers claim that a car will do 28 to the gallon.
This is done under ideal conditions at a constant speed on a rolling road.
Wind, hills, overtaking and tire pressures will decrease fuel mileage.
Your car is ok. Don`t expect much more unless you want to drive at 56mph
