1992 Volvo 740 sometimes floods out and will not start

Twice in the past week my 740 Volvo wagon would not start and sounded like it was flooded. I recently replaced the timing belt and also the spark plugs.
I brought it to a local repair shop but they could not the source of the problem?

Any idea of what it could be?

Thanks!

It happened when the car was already warmed up, not cold. It seems to be OK in the morning.

I don't know much about the coke system.

    Thank you for your response.

The plugs were black the first time it happened, I took out the front plug and then it started up. I replaced the spark plugs, but it happened again.

sorry for delay, in writing back been away on holiday easter weekend,, if the plugs are getting black it being choked up mixture is to rich ,, there is a defo problem with the air flow censors, or cold start valve faulty ,, sounds like the cold start it no nocking off or its coming on when it should,, this is why the garage never found the problem.. if it didnt happen then then they wouldnt find the problem.

Floods when cold

Define flooding.

  1. Black smoke out of the tail pipe?

If the fuel return line is plugged,it will flood. If the fuel pressure regulator has lost its vacuum signal ,it will flood.

If there is a large vacuum leak, the O2 will see a lean condition and cause the rich condition.gas mileage will suck, big time.

This "flooding" happens when the engine is cold? ONLY?
Be sure the air filter is not clogged and the PCV is not plugged up solid.
Also, there are a few tubes from the valve cover that vents oil vapors into the air filter housing.

During this flood mode, hold the pedal to the floor and shut the engine OFF-it should NOT keep running.(Leaky injectors)...

Do this when engine is hot and cold.

Engine loses power and must pump gas to get it going again

Check spark plugs. If completely black and looks burnt, replace them

1990 volvo 740 wagon shuts off while driving

sounds like you have a computer glitch. i would take it to any auto shop and pay 50 bucks so they can take a look at your e.c.u. (engine control unit) we had a similar problem a few years ago with our 1990 volvo 740 gle 2.3l station wagon. it was a glitch with the computer. got a mixed signal with the mass air flow sensor.

It is a right hand thread and you usually need an impact gun. Take the fan out of the way, to give you more room, I have found that helps.

Engine swap, car will not start

It sounds like you don't have the correct flex plate and it is throwing the timing off not letting it fire at the correct time.
