Check VSS Vehicule Speed Sensor wire may be corroted, bad connection or faulty; if 2wd the adaptor is located on the extension housing of the transmission (left side)
if 4wd look on transfer case extension (left side)

SOURCE: guages on instrument panel died 1998 jeep cherokee
Others have had this problem too. Most times it's a loose connection behind the gauge cluster.:
When you take the dash apart to get at the back of the guage you'll see
that the connectors for the panel are attached to a molded piece of
black plastic and the panel sits on top of them. The solution I used
was to actually cut the plastic back (you can break it back too...) and
insert the plugs tightly, then put a dab of hot glue on top and bottom
to keep them from backing out. It keeps them nice and snug and you can
remove them in one minute with a razor knife if you need to. After
about a year I haven't had the problem since.
BTW - your mileage
is not accurate if you have this problem. I noticed that when the
gauges are off, it does not count mileage...went about 5000k miles
without an oil change once...Just some addt'l info.
I know it's not a factory fix, but it costs about $1 for a glue stick and it only takes about 30min.
Hope it helps you.
SOURCE: where is the fuse for the tail lights for jeep '96 grand cherokee
Unfortunately, could not find owners manual for 1996.
Website only has models 2004-current
=> http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals/index.html
There are two fuse boxes. One under driver compartment usually left to the steering colum. A label is stamp to identify each fuse. I would look at Park Lights and Instrument Cluster fuses. The easy way is to take a flashlight and look at all fuses. If they are all okay. Then just remove the Park Lights and Instrument Cluster fuse and reseat them. The other fuse box is under the hood and near the batter. It also has a label to identify each fuse.

have the jeep scanned by a dealership NOW!!
unless you dont mind driving with the airbags disabled!!,
--you basically have an error with the air bag system!!,
and can only be diagnosed by the dealer's scanning software,(welcome to new age cars!)
