Problem with temp, battery and oil gauges, speedometer erratic.

Battery and oil gauges reading far right of normal.

Water temp gauge needle moved far right and is now inverted.

Speedometer erratic. Works okay for awhile then needle sticks while driving between 20 and 80, usually. Needle drops down to normal after starting and stopping a few times then problem repeats.

SOURCE: INTERMITENT SPEEDOMETER MALFUNCTION, OK FOR

Likely one of the speed sensors on the trans, and depending on year of the vehicle, some of the 90's models had the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transmission.

SOURCE: 1988 Dodge D150 Erratic Speedometer

Unscrew the speedometer cable from the back of the gauge and from the transmission, take the cable out of the sheath, clean it off with carb or brake cleaner, oil it and put it back in. If that doesn't do it, replace cable assembly. If that doesn't do it, pull the speedometer gear out of the transmission and check for wear. Replace if needed.

SOURCE: green sports light blinks , speedometer needle bounces or doesn't

The transmission speed sensor is probably going bad, it's located on the bellhousing, back by the firewall, and has a plug with either 2 or 3 wires. This sensor controls both the transmission shift points and the speedometer, the only gauge the ECM feeds information to is the tachometer. This sensor isn't that hard to replace, but last time I checked the only place that carries them is the dealer. But I don't remember them being that expensive a heck of alot cheaper than an ECM. Good luck and hope this solves your problems, I think it will.

SOURCE: speedometer does not function properly. needle

A faulty vehicle speed sensor will cause this.
It's mounted on the back end of the transmission where the drive shaft slides into, near the top, it's just held in with a bolt, on the right side of the tranny, also has a wire connection.

When jackaroo 1988 is motoring where does the needle in the temperature gauge normally be

If your temp gauge has only the cold (C) or hot (H) letters then the operating range would be the width of the needle under 1/2 way between c and h. If it remains steady at slightly over 1/2 way that would be just the setting of the gauge. How to get to know where the needle would sit at a specific position in relation to water temp. Do the following
Remove the temp sender unit and attach an earth wire to the body of the unit to earth. Place the sender unit in a container of water up to the threads .Put a mercury thermometer in the container beside the sender unit Apply heat to the container and watch the gauge needle move in relation to the thermometer reading. Operating temp will be about 80 degrees C on the thermometer and that would be about 1/2 way on the gauge.

Battery indicator light comes on above idle RPM, gauges start fluctuating.

The first thing you need to know is what the alternator output is when this starts happening.
It could be a faulty connection in the wiring harness, or a bad ground connection, or a failing alternator.

Pontiac sunfire Gauges not working after Battery change

Just pull out the 10amp cluster fuse and put it back in. The cluster will pop right back up. My 2004 does it every time the battery goes dead.

My battery went bad in my 1998 Buick Park Avenue and the auto shop tried to jump it which cause my speedometer, tachometer and gas gauge to flip rapidly left and right. The gas gauge flipped to the right...

The instrument cluster is a sealed unit, do not recommend taking it apart for that. What I would do is drill a small 1/16" hole near where the stop pin is through the plastic outer cover and use a paper clip or sewing needle to move the fuel guage needle back to the other side of the stop pin. Reseal with a drop of super glue to keep dust out of cluster.

The oil pressure gauge on my '93 E150 just started going from below normal to normal pressure erratically. What is the most probable cause?

If there is an erratic movement like that, it would seem that your sender wire is loose or damaged, or your sender is bad. Normally pressure fluctuations will not be fast enough to produce the readings you describe.
These gauges are not really what can be called gauges anyway, as I found out in my 93 F250. They just take a reading at the sender, and if it is within a range anywhere within normal specs, which run something like 4LB to 80LB, the gauge will just stay in the middle of the normal range. What I heard was that there were too many customer complaints about the needle moving all the time, so they replaced it with one that would stay right in the middle which would be acceptable to most all drivers.

Strange guage surges on Ford 350.

I think the ford 350 might be a loose ground wire. This can cause the erraticness within the gauges.

The windstar is a faulty sensor switch on the brakes master cylinder. It leaks brake fluid into the wires that are connected to it causeing a short circuit and resulting in a blown fuse that powers the AC, cruise control, odometer, speedometer and the ABS light to remain on. This issue can also cause a fire. This fire can occur even when the car is off. To fix the problem go to this URL - http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/
