A mechanic told me that some Tahoes are equipped with a way to access the fuel pump from the rear that keeps you from having to remove the gas tank to replace the fuel pump. Is this true?
The most expensive fuel pump I could find was 400 bucks (Lifetime Warranty), and yet I hear that the to get a mechanic to put it on would be a total of 1000. So labor would be double the amount of the part? The most expensive fuel pump I could find was 400 bucks (Lifetime Warranty), and yet I hear that the to get a mechanic to put it on would be a total of 1000. replacing the fuel pump on this truck, requires the fuel tank to be removed. the fuel pump is installed in the fuel tank. you can either drop the fuel tank or remove the truck bed to gain access to the fuel pump
All vehicles with fuel injection use a high-pressure pump mounted inside the gas tank. This is virtually all vehicles built since about 1990. I don't know about this particular vehicle, some have an access panel above the tank that allows you to remove the pump without dropping the tank, others don't. Dropping a nearly full tank of gas is no easy task. Try asking your auto parts store or the Chrysler parts counter if this car has such an access panel.
By the way, the pump is immersed in the fuel, and uses the fuel to cool the pump. Never let your tank get below 1/4 full to reduce overheating of the pump, which shortens its life. Occasionally is OK, but running below 1/4 tank on a regular basis will cut the life of the pump significantly.
FUEL PUMP IS IN GAS TANK THE 1.8 ENGINES YOU CAN ACCESS FUEL PUMP BY REMOVING THE REAR SEAT AND THE ACCESS PANEL.THE 3.5 ENGINE YOU CAN REMOVE REAR SEAT CUSHION AND ACCESS PANEL FROM FLOOR TO REMOVE FUEL PUMP.THE 2.5 AND 3.2 ENGINE REMOVE FUEL PUMP FROM TRUNK FLOOR.AND THE 2.3 AND 3.0 ENGINES FUEL TANK HAS BE LOWER BEFORE YOU CAN REMOVE FUEL PUMP.
If you have a carburetor, you have a mechanical fuel pump on the engine. If you have a throttle body injection your pump is in the tank and the tank needs to be removed to get at it. Before dropping tank make sure the pump is getting power and a good ground.
replacing the fuel pump can be a diffecult task. just be careful. i believe that if you remove the rear seat there should be an access panel there to remove the fuel pump. if not than you will have to remove the gas tank. if you have to remove the gas tank then you shou have a shop do it for you.
