Try a new coil. Red spark is not good, you need a blue snapping spark. If not the coil, better have the ignition analyzed. Possibly a bad ignition module.
I had a coil for this truck and changed it with no change. I will take the TFI down to the auto zone and have it tested. If you can think of anything else I should take and have tested let me know. Thanks for your response.
To date I have found a bad TFI and coil. Replaced them both but still the same problem and still that annoying red spark. I found a lose screw on the left side of the upper plenum. Wondering if a ground goes there. Can't find any lose wires to go with it. Help please.
See if you can find a wiring diagram and check the ignition circuit carefully. Wires good and pass resistance tests? How about the pickup coil, or what the computer uses to know crank position? Worst case, you could have a bad computer, try a used one before buying new.
pick up coil was changed to no avail. I thought the crank position sensor would not start if it was bad.
I will pull it and have it checked as well just to be sure.
yes, could be the crank sensor.
Actually this 2.9 does not have a crank sensor. That function may be combined in the TFI circuit, not sure. I ordered a factory wiring diagram book and it should be here next week sometime. Meanwhile i will go to dismantler and look at a 2.9 there to see if I can find the possible missing ground.
Went to dismantler and could not find a ranger with the engine still in tack. Will wait until I get the diagram book this week. I will monitor for any advice you all may have. When I get the solution I will post it for those concerned.
The pickup coil serves the function of crankshaft sensor. yes, keep updating, I would like to know the outcome.
Ok, at this point I have received the wiring diagram produced by Ford. I have verified the circuit and grounds to be intact. So far the ignition coil, pickup coil, ignition module and rotor have been replaced. The cap, wires and plugs have been tested and both functional and visual tests are good. I have verified the timing. Nothing has changed from the original problem It still cuts out and stalls in drive and runs smooth during idle. The Red spark from the ignition coil is still there. I am totally stumped and have no idea what to do next. Help.
so, believe it or not, the truck runs great today. replaced the tank sending unit seal and gas cap and it passed the evap test for smog. licensed and ready to go. I drove it all over today and no problems at all. At this point I have no confidence in the truck and it's reliability. Just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I will update this post when it happens again. Thank you all for your ideas.
