I changed the valve covers on an 02 nissan xterra, and realized that I had to remove the distributor in order to get the driver side off. I put the distributor back on without checking my mark, and now it won't start. I got it running, but it ran rough, now it won't even start, and it is getting plenty of fire and fuel, help!!!

Trial and error won't reset the basic timing, merely cause more frustration and delay and could damage the oxygen sensor and CAT in addition.

An engine with too much unburned fuel inside is likely to give up all efforts at starting and once you have set the timing you might need to do considerable cranking with the throttle wide open and the fuel pump disconnected before it does start.

An experienced mechanic could probably figure out the timing close enough to run reasonably but for accuracy the repair manual will provide the proper procedure.

Since this is an intermittent problem, first try to determine if the problem arises due to one of these many intermittent problems:

* Vehicle vibration
* Heat sensitive
* Freezing
* Water intrusion
* Electrical load
* Cold or hot start up

If you can't isolate the cause of the intermittent problem, you can try adjusting the Idle Speed/Ignition Timing/Idle Mixture Ratio:

Idle Speed/Ignition Timing/Idle Mixture Ratio Adjustment

PREPARATION
1) Make sure that the following parts are in good order.

* Battery
* Ignition system
* Engine oil and coolant levels
* Fuses
* ECM harness connector
* Vacuum hoses
* Air intake system
* (Oil filler cap, oil level gauge, etc.)
* Fuel pressure
* Engine compression
* EGR valve operation (If so equipped)
* Throttle valve
* Evaporative emission system

2) On air conditioner equipped models, checks should be carried out while the air conditioner is OFF.
3) On automatic transmission equipped models, when checking idle rpm, ignition timing and mixture ratio,
checks should be carried out while shift lever is in “N” position.
4) When measuring “CO” percentage, insert probe more than 40 cm (15.7 in) into tail pipe.
5) Turn off headlamps, heater blower, rear defogger.
6) Keep front wheels pointed straight ahead.
7) Make the check after the cooling fan has stopped.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1 INSPECTION START
1. Visually check the following:
I Air cleaner clogging
I Hoses and ducts for leaks
I EGR valve operation (If so equipped)
I Electrical connectors
I Gasket
I Throttle valve and throttle position sensor operation
2. Start engine and warm it up until engine coolant temperature indicator points to the middle of gauge.
Ensure engine stays below 1,000 rpm.
3. Open engine hood and run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no-load.
4. Perform diagnostic test mode II (Self-diagnostic results).

I would remove the full timing cover most times the bad spot is right on the teeth first. Then get back to me. I think you will find your problem there. But please when you post further please provide the year make and model we have no idea what you are referencing 90 2000 2010 4x4 etc and i will still need this info asto tell you if the engine is shot if it broke during rotation some engines bend valves when this happens. I am looking on how to replace the arm for my drivers side wiper on my nissan xterra not the wiper itself the arm inside.

On the bottom of the arm theres a cover, remove the cover and you will see a nut remove the nut and wiggle arm off,make sure to align new arm in the correct postion, so with wipers off arm should be down where it normal sits with wipers off,

Looking for distributor wire diagram

If your engine is a four cylinder, the firing order is as follows; from left to right on the block..1-2-3-4...look at the top of the distributor cap: counter clockwise from #1, the order is...1-3-4-2. If your engine is a six cylinder, face the front of the engine...left bank is: 1-3-5...right bank is: 2-4-6...look at top of distributor cap starting with #1...read counter clockwise...1-2-3-4-5-6. I have been told that I have a valve cover leak. Will it harm the motor if I continue to drive it? How much does it cost to repai? The model is 2000 Nissan Xterra

You can do the repair yourself. Your valve covers leaking will result in you losing oil because it's not making it's way to the oil pan. You probably won't hurt the engine if you keep the oil level constant, but you can replace the gaskets yourself. It's a bit of a job, but not too bad. You'll proably have to remove the intake manifolds and replace these gaskets before the valve covers. The valve covers are just plastic covers for the valves-one big box. Put new gaskets in place and reinstall the reverse of removal.

jjangel24: There were two engines used in that year Xterra
VG33DE V-6
KA22DE 4CYL
On the 6 cylinder, it is screwed into the plenum chamber on the side and you will see a hose coming from a valve cover going to it.
The 4 cylinder is in the valve cover and the hose fits over it and goes to the air intake just after the throttle body.
