I have been told that you can not put any engine in the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500, expect the stock engine. Is this true? The cost I was quoted to replace the engine was $5000.00, for a rebuilt engine to be put in. But I do not want the stock engine back because of the problems it has with the oil. any helpful post would be great.

You can replaced it with another enigne but stock. The 2005 Ram 1500 engine will fit right in. If you are trying to get a totally different manufacture engine then you will need to make sure that the mounting bolts, tranny and everything else lines up. Technically speaking, you can put any engine the is rear wheel drive in your vehicle. You might just have to move the munting brackets, replace the tranny, open up the fender wells things like that. But the 2005 1500 will fit directly into your vehicle
