I own a 2000 ford windstar lx. just got three brand new transponder keys from the dealer to try to start my van. they said it was the pats system. well still doesn't work. turn the key on, lights, radio, come on. but van will not even crank over. all my fuses are good. tried to bypass pats anti-theft by jumping the starter. still nothing works. volt meter on batt. is between 12-13 volts, turn the key it goes up to 15. so i would think alternator and batt. work. any new ideas i have not tried. thank you for any input.
First thing I would check is to see if you have power at the trigger wire of the starter motor while someone is trying to start the vehicle for you. It will be a Yellow with a light blue trace. If you do then I would check to see if the main battery cable has power to it all the time when someone is trying to crank it. If it does then I would hold a test light on the case of the starter motor and have someone try to crank it. Make sure that the ground you use for this test is on the negative battery terminal not just anywhere on the car. If the test light lights while you are cranking it then you have a bad ground. Hook up a set of jumper cables from the battery negative terminal and clamp it directly on to your starter motor and see if it starts. If you check it and the test light doesn't light up and all the other checks are good then your starter motor has failed. If one of the other tests has failed then you have a starter relay problem or something else. let me know what you find out.
Yes you will have to get your keys programmed by the dealer unless someone you know can bring the computer scan tool home to you. What I usually tell my friends to do is by 1 key and program that 1 key and tape it to the bottom of the steering column them just go get regular keys made up at the hardware store that way you aren't paying all that money for those transponder keys cause as long as that transponder key is on the column the module will see that key then you can use a regular key in the ignition. Then who cares if someone loses that regular key they are like 2 dollars. Do you have a wiring diagram of this van if you have access to a fax machine I can send you one and it might make this problem a little easier for you to solve. Let me know then I can fax them to ya.
i have a 2002 wind star that wont crank ? came in for a turn signal problem ? had the battery disconected for a lil bit now wont crank by key can by starter

thank you for your input. so far i have tried the starter check. also i pulled the relays. it was the 302 relay. i put power to the neg. an pos. heard it click on and off. also used my ohm meter. on them after i did that, to make sure i didn't damage them. also checked the maxi fuse 105. both in the engine compartment. then the fuse 19 in the fuse panal. a freind at the dealer ship said even though i got the new transponder keys, i may still need to reprogram the van itself. never heard of that before. if that is true can i do it at home. when i got the three transponder keys i turned each one 8 times with-in 60 seconds. once again thanks for any input
something new i found today. without using my keys or remote, i can arm and disarm my van by the driver side door. the alarm goes off and all i have to do is hit the unlock button on my door and it disarms. that can't be right, someone can break in and hit the door unlock button to disarm it. so my car still does not work. turn the new keys in the ignition all the lights still come on, but the theft light blinks too. tried the obd 2 and the codes said pass, the mil setting, i needed the car to run so that didn't help, and the other setting said everything else was either ok or n/a because the car would not crank to test egr etc.. now i am really stumped. neareast dealer is at least 80 miles from me and sure don't want that tow bill.
